Bulgaria Declares Code Orange Heat Alert :: Balkan Insight

Code orange means intense weather situations with potential damage, injuries and casualties. The alert is to be active for the entire country for a third day in a row.

For an eight day in a row, temperatures are to reach between 35 and 40 degrees Centigrade in most parts of Bulgaria.

People are advised to keep track of the weather conditions and not to take any risks if possible, the National Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology says.

According to the recommendations, people should not go outside, especially around noon and during the afternoon and should consume lots of water.

On Monday, the heat wave in Bulgaria claimed its first victim, as a 62-year-old man died in the Danube town of Silistra.

The heat wave is expected to last at least until Sunday.
