Fags For Sharia Allowed To March In Pride Parade

Pride wrong in allowing QuAIA's politicized agenda, says B'nai Brith Canada

TORONTO, 29 June 2012 - B'nai Brith Canada has expressed its dismay over today's wrongheaded decision by Pride Toronto's Dispute Resolution Panel and has stated that the decision to allow Queers Against Israeli Apartheid to march in this weekend's parade is a result of a faulty process. The organization said the parade has turned from inclusion to exclusion and that it expects the City of Toronto to make next year's Pride funding conditional on what transpires at this year's parade.

Frank Dimant, CEO of B?nai Brith Canada, issued the following statement:
"We are disappointed that Pride Toronto, an organization once celebrated for its struggle for diversity and inclusion, is allowing Queers Against Israeli Apartheid (QuAIA) to act out its politicized agenda against the Jewish State. Today's decision by Pride's Dispute Resolution Panel is unquestionably clouded by a faulty process and unfortunately displays that Pride has chosen the route of exclusion."

"Allowing QuAIA to march in this weekend's parade is tantamount to endorsing the demonization campaign against the Jewish State and its supporters in Canada. It is now in the hands of the City of Toronto to make next year's Pride funding conditional on QuAIA's behaviour at this year's march. Meanwhile, parade-goers should mark their displeasure at Pride's decision by turning their backs on hateful slogans when passing them this weekend."

Police: Adult 'provoked' small children to fight

By Annette Arreola and Jason Kandel, NBCLosAngeles

Authorities in California are trying to identify the people responsible for a video that showed two young children fighting.

In the video, titled "My nephew messed him up for picking on his home boy," two boys are seen kicking, punching and choking each other while an adult shooting the video eggs them on.

An adult voice in the video can be heard saying, "Get off the ground, Charlie."

The video ends when a child breaks up the fight.

Someone found the video -- first posted on Facebook -- and reported it to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

Sheriff's officials said it appeared the kids were being "provoked by an adult."

?What?s most disturbing is that there are adults nearby that are not stopping it,??department?spokesperson Cindy Bachman, "The adults that are seen in the video are not setting any kind of example for these children."

Watch US News videos on msnbc.com

"It?s our responsibility -- if we have information, if we know who these people are -- to call in."

The location of the fight and the time it was taken were unknown.

2013 Toyota Avalon Gets a Hybrid Powertrain

2013 Toyota Avalon 550x366 2013 Toyota Avalon Gets a Hybrid Powertrain

When the all-new, North American designed and engineered 2013 Avalon goes on sale later this year, consumers can choose between a powerful V6 gasoline powertrain and Toyota?s proven Hybrid Synergy Drive. The efficiency offered by the new hybrid model will help the all-new premium mid-size sedan achieve excellent fuel economy with an EPA-rating of 40 mpg combined.

In addition to offering a hybrid powertrain, the new Avalon features a stunning design, improved dynamic performance, a greater degree of refinement, and a highly spacious, comfortable interior experience with an abundance of outstanding convenience technologies.

Powerful, Efficient V6 Engine

The 2013 Avalon will feature a proven 3.5-liter, DOHC V6 engine coupled with a six-speed automatic transaxle, which has been enhanced to offer more responsive and efficient performance. The all-aluminum six-cylinder engine will produce 268 horsepower and 248 lbs. ft. of torque, which will propel the new sedan to 60 mph in under seven seconds. Compared to the previous-generation Avalon, this 2013 powertrain combination offers improved fuel economy, performance, superior shift feel and response, with upgraded drivability and quietness.

This enhanced powertrain?s programming has been updated to offer ECO, NORMAL, and SPORT Modes. The ECO mode prioritizes fuel efficiency by reducing power application at lower speeds and reducing energy consumed by the air-conditioning system. The SPORT Mode provides increased acceleration responses though altered engine control unit (ECU) programming, and it offers a more direct and responsive EPS programming to enhance steering feel.

In addition, the new transaxle is equipped with a numerically lower differential gear drive ratio (3.23), designed to help improve fuel economy. The V6-powered 2013 Avalon achieves an EPA-rated 25 mpg combined (21 city/ 31 hwy).

The transmission operation has been made more efficient and responsive with the adoption of a flex-start control feature lock-up clutch. With lock-up control, the transmission?s torque converter fully engages at a lower RPM during standing starts to improve acceleration response and help suppress unnecessary engine revolutions. The new transmission is also kept at an optimal temperature with an automatic-transmission fluid warmer, helping enhance efficiency.

The multi-mode automatic transmission console shifter offers a D range and can be moved into an S-mode gate, which allows manually operated sequential shifting using the console shifter or available (Touring and Limited models) steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The gear can be selected by moving the shifter up to (+) position or lower using the (-) position to experience highly responsive shifts. By using the paddles or in S-range, the transmission uses a quick responding shift-logic that includes throttle blipping for downshifts. The gear changes and range-of-gear selections are displayed in the color multi-information display.

Avalon Adds Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive

For consumers seeking a premium mid-size sedan with excellent fuel economy ratings and an environmental message, the new Avalon features a full power-split hybrid system. Coupled with reductions in vehicle weight and improvements in aerodynamics, the Avalon Hybrid is expects to achieve impressive fuel economy ratings. The 2013 Avalon incorporates the latest advances in Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive technology, building upon Toyota?s 14 years of hybrid-development experience. The Avalon Hybrid features a 2.5-liter, Atkinson-cycle, four-cylinder engine, a 244.8-volt nickel-metal hydride battery pack, and a pair of electric motor/generators within the transaxle. A power-control unit located in the engine compartment houses an inverter, a DC-DC converter, a step-up converter (raises voltage to a maximum of 650 volts) and the hybrid-drive ECU, which governs the seamless operation of electric-motor power application and regenerative braking. The power control unit relies on liquid cooling to maintain an efficient temperature.

The Avalon Hybrid achieves a total system output of 200 horsepower and offers three unique modes of operation: EV, ECO and SPORT. The Avalon Hybrid models achieve an EPA-rated 40 mpg in the city, and a 39 mpg on the highway for a combined 40 mpg EPA-rating.

The 2013 Avalon Hybrid offers an EV mode that, under certain conditions, allows the vehicle to operate solely on electric propulsion. EV mode can be engaged, provided other conditions are correct, for up to one mile at speeds up to 25 mph, providing an all-electric option that is convenient in residential areas or parking garages.

The ECO drive mode engages the gasoline motor, but reduces throttle response and HVAC output to help improve overall efficiency. The SPORT Mode takes full advantage of the new Avalon?s dynamic character, improved chassis, and enhanced suspension by altering the engine?s throttle response and enhancing steering feel.

The Avalon?s hybrid?s battery pack is comprised of 204 cells and is located in the vehicle trunk behind the rear seats, while still providing ample trunk space. The scroll casing for the battery cooling system?s blower fan has been designed to produce extremely quiet and efficient airflow, helping reduce interior noise and elevating refinement. The power-control unit, located in the engine bay, houses the inverter, DC-DC converter.

The efficient hybrid transaxle in the new Avalon contains two high-output electric motor/generators, a power-split device, an open differential and the final drive ratio. Motor/Generator 1 (MG1) is used to start the gasoline engine and generate the energy that is returned to the battery to power the system. Motor/Generator 2 (MG2) is primarily responsible for electric drivetrain propulsion and regenerative braking. The hybrid vehicle transaxle also incorporates a flywheel-damper design that helps reduce noise and vibration during engine engagement.

NFL Division Betting Preview: NFC North

NFL Futures

July is only mere days away and that means that NFL training camps will be starting in the coming weeks and before you know it, summer will be over and football season will be here. It is never to early at this time to start thinking football then and after having already briefly previewed the NFC South and NFC West divisions, it?s time to turn our attention to the NFC North.

NFC North Odds: Green Bay -250; Chicago +350; Detroit +400; Minnesota +2000

Minnesota

We?ll begin with the easiest one this time around and say that Minnesota really has no shot. They are dealing with a disgruntled #1 WR in Percy Harvin, issues at QB as to who is the #1 and how far Christian Ponder can take them and a RB who is coming off a big time surgery. Yes, Adrian Peterson is still one of the best backs in the game, but he can only do so much by himself. He will put up his numbers on a bad team in 2012 (like MJD in Jacksonville last year) but this team still has a horrid defense and they don?t have the offensive weapons to keep up with the likes of the other three teams in the division. After all their season win total sits at 5.5 for the year, a number they will be lucky to even eclipse.

Detroit

The Lions are listed at the same season win total with Chicago (9 wins) but are favored to do so whereas Chicago is a small dog. So it is surprising to see Detroit have the worse odds to win the division, but as always with the Lions health will be the key. They have one of the first ?byes? in Week 5 and the schedule only intensifies from there. Like the rest of the NFC North, they do get some easier games against the AFC South and NFC West but for Detroit to claim this division it will all be about those four games against Chicago and Green Bay. They have to go to Lambeau in early December which is never fun, but if they can find a consistent running game and have Stafford and Megatron stay healthy, they could dethrone the Packers here.

Chicago

The Bears have been making a lot of headlines this summer with their new acquisitions and excitement surrounding the upcoming season. But they never paid RB Matt Forte and sometimes hype is simply just that; hype. Cutler still has some question marks surrounding him and the defense isn?t getting any younger. If they can come out of the gate and get a win @ Green Bay or @ Dallas in the first 5 weeks they could head to their bye at a minimum of 4-1 with some easier games down the stretch. That being said, this is a team that always finds a way to fall flat in games they should win and that shouldn?t change this year. At +350 this team just has too many question marks to consider betting on to win the division.

Green Bay

You can?t be surprised at the Packers being heavy favorites to win this division crown again after a near perfect regular season a year ago and the roster still intact. They have one of the easiest schedules out there after the opening two weeks (vs. San Fran and Chicago) and could almost coast to another division crown. By the time they reach their bye week in Week 10 they should be at least 7-2 and well on their way to another crown. Obviously health could derail the Packers quest for another run at the Super Bowl, but they shouldn?t have too much of an issue winning another NFC North title.

In the end, you have to almost begin and end with Green Bay here. At -250 the juice is a bit steep but with the AFC South and NFC West on the card, the Packers should cruise to double digit wins. However, Detroit at +400 does offer some value here if you think they can take the next step and knock off the Packers at least once in there two games against them.

Tom and Katie's Divorce Hits Twitter: People Are Mean

Tom and KatieEarlier today, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes?announced they?would be getting a divorce after five years of marriage. In a society built on basic humanity, news of any longtime romantic pair's splitting would be treated with a somber mood and, perhaps, best wishes to both parties involved. However, we do not live in such a world. We live in a world with Twitter.

After quite a while perusing the social networking site to get a taste of how the public was reacting to Cruise's and Holmes' split, a pattern became apparent. For, after immersing itself in the deepest, darkest knolls of the Twitterverse, Hollywood.com couldn't come across a single Tweet about Tom and Katie that was not making fun of their divorce.

Whether you find this to be shameful or entertaining, it's simply the turn our society has taken. So here it is: just a sample of the mass of Cruise/Holmes hate that is encompassing the Internet.?

CERN to give update on Higgs search as curtain raiser to ICHEP conference

ScienceDaily (June 28, 2012) ? CERN will hold a scientific seminar at 9:00 CEST on 4 July to deliver the latest update in the search for the Higgs boson. At this seminar, coming on the eve of this year's major particle physics conference, ICHEP, in Melbourne, the ATLAS and CMS experiments will deliver the preliminary results of their 2012 data analysis.

"Data taking for ICHEP concluded on Monday 18 June after a very successful first period of LHC running in 2012," said CERN's Director for Accelerators and Technology, Steve Myers. "I'm very much looking forward to seeing what the data reveals."

The 2012 LHC run schedule was designed to deliver the maximum possible quantity of data to the experiments before the ICHEP conference, and with more data delivered between April and June 2012 than in the whole 2011 run, the strategy has been a success. Furthermore, the experiments have been refining their analysis techniques to improve their efficiency in picking out Higgs-like events from the millions of collisions occurring every second. This means that their sensitivity to new phenomena has significantly increased for both years' data sets. The crunching of all this data has been done by the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid, which has exceeded its design specifications to handle the unprecedented volume of data and computing.

"We now have more than double the data we had last year," said CERN Director for Research and Computing, Sergio Bertolucci, "that should be enough to see whether the trends we were seeing in the 2011 data are still there, or whether they've gone away. It's a very exciting time."

If and when a new particle is discovered, ATLAS and CMS will need time to ascertain whether it is the long sought Higgs boson, the last missing ingredient of the Standard Model of particle physics, or whether it is a more exotic form of the boson that could open the door to new physics.

"It's a bit like spotting a familiar face from afar," said CERN Director General Rolf Heuer, "sometimes you need closer inspection to find out whether it's really your best friend, or actually your best friend's twin."

The Standard Model gives an extraordinarily precise picture of the matter that makes up all the visible universe, and the forces that govern its behaviour, but there are good reasons to believe that this is not the end of the story. For example, we know from observation that the visible universe is just 4% of what seems to be out there.

Physicists from around the world gathering in Melbourne for the ICHEP conference will be able to join the seminar via a live two-way link. The seminar will be followed by a press conference at CERN. It will be available via webcast at http://webcast.cern.ch/, accompanied by plain language interpretations from physicists accessible in blogs and chats from the webcast site.

CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is the world's leading laboratory for particle physics. It has its headquarters in Geneva. At present, its Member States are Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Romania is a candidate for accession. Israel and Serbia are Associate Members in the pre-stage to Membership. India, Japan, the Russian Federation, the United States of America, Turkey, the European Commission and UNESCO have Observer status.

Biz Break: Bad quarter has great ending for Wall Street, post-Facebook IPOs

Click photo to enlarge

Today: Europe's economic deal gives Wall Street gigantic gains, but second quarter still a disaster for stocks. Also: Facebook's run of positive weeks ends, put tech IPOs kick into gear again; and other tech stocks find gains.

A huge Europe-fueled rally puts cherry on top of sour second-quarter sundae

Wall Street's sad second quarter ended Friday with a rally that felt like an ice-cold lemonade to investors stranded in a desert for months, with a long-awaited deal for European security providing immediate relief and hopes that the summer will bring even more gains.

The spark was a deal European leaders agreed on Thursday night, which guarantees funding for troubled banks across Europe, bypassing governments that had been told they had to adopt strict austerity measures in order to receive bailout funds. The move -- which came from a summit many investors and experts expected would accomplish nothing -- is a relief to those who have been concerned that the European economy was on the brink of collapse.

"The move to recapitalize banks directly is a big deal and will help to break the 'vicious

circle' between banks and sovereigns that has been at the very heart of this crisis," ABN AMRO economist Nick Kounis told Reuters.

The effect on Wall Street was immediate, as stocks took off as Friday's trading session began and ended with the most positive day of 2012 for the tech-heavy Nasdaq and broad-based Standard & Poor's 500 indexes, which rose 3 percent and 2.5 percent, respectively. The blue-chip Dow Jones industrial average had its second-best day of 2012 with a 2.2 percent rise.

"Uncertainty is diminishing," David Kelly, chief global strategist at JPMorgan Funds, told the Associated Press. "These are all big question marks that have been out there, and as those question marks decrease, stock prices and interest rates increase."

The large gains pushed the S&P to its best June in more than a decade, as investors who typically sell off stocks before the lull of the summer months pushed back into the market. For the month, the Dow rose 3.9 percent, the S&P climbed 4 percent and the Nasdaq added 3.8 percent.

Thos gains could not offset the large losses from April and May, however, as concerns about the economy -- domestically and abroad -- had investors selling their stocks for the relative security of bonds. For the second quarter, which also ended on Wall Street at the end of Friday's session, the Dow fell 2.5 percent, the S&P 500 lost 3.3 percent and the Nasdaq dropped 5.1 percent.

With a European deal complete, however, investors hope the summer quarter continues Friday's momentum.

"You are going to be see a nice summer rally out of this. Think of where this market would be if it hadn't been for the euro crisis," Paul Mendelsohn, chief investment strategist at Windham Financial Services, told Reuters. "The market is now looking at least six to eight months forward on what is the economic landscape going to look like in an improving European growth environment."

Facebook returns to losses as IPO market tries to get back on track

The biggest news of the second quarter from Wall Street was Facebook's record-breaking initial public offering, which was followed by the stock tanking hard for two weeks after its debut. As a result of Facebook's struggles, as well as the negative economic outlook, the second quarter was dismal for IPOs, according to Renaissance Capital, with only $37.5 billion raised in IPOs worldwide -- nearly half of that coming from Facebook.

Even with Facebook's IPO -- which Renaissance said was the 7th largest public debut of all time -- there was a 52 percent drop year-over-year in the number of IPOs and a 35 percent drop in proceeds. "The global IPO market will need an improvement in overall market conditions and IPO price discounts to get back on track," the IPO tracker wrote in its second-quarter report.

Technology IPOs experienced a warm return to Wall Street on Friday, however, as the first major tech company to debut publicly since Facebook saw its shares jump 37 percent in its first day of trading. ServiceNow, a San Diego-based enterprise software company, sold 11.7 million shares for $18 apiece -- above its initial range of $15 to $17 -- and saw the stock end Friday at $24.60.

Facebook, meanwhile, was one of the few technology stocks that failed to move higher Friday, as the Menlo Park company broke a string of two consecutive positive weeks. After gaining more than 10 percent in each of the past two weeks, Facebook fell 5.9 percent this week as analysts from the company's underwriting banks issued lukewarm reports about the stock that sowed doubts about the company's earnings capability, and the company admittedly flubbed a change to users' email preferences.

Analysts will get their chance to see what Facebook's earnings look like on July 26, when the company will issue its first quarterly earnings report as a public company. Facebook notified investors and analysts of the date Friday on its investor relations page, which had been noticeably scant of information.

Facebook fell 0.9 percent Friday, its third consecutive negative session and fourth daily fall of the week. The world's most popular social network ended the second quarter with a stock price of $31.09, 18.2 percent lower than the IPO price of $38 but 21.8 percent higher than the lowest price paid for the stock so far, $25.52.

Tech stocks bounce back with large gains

Facebook was certainly the outlier in Friday's trading, however, as other Silicon Valley tech stocks shot higher after recent struggles.

Palo Alto-based VMware rebounded strongly from Thursday's losses with a gain of 8.3 percent after FBR Capital Markets analyst Daniel Ives issued a report rebutting beliefs that lessening demand globally would hammer the company's earnings. Redwood City software giant Oracle (ORCL) moved up 5.4 percent after RBC Capital Markets analyst Robert Breza upgraded the company's outlook and price target.

Hardware companies received a needed bounce after falling Thursday on doubts that European customers would be yearning for their products. Apple (AAPL) gained 2.6 percent, Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) increased 3.9 percent, and NetApp rose 6.5 percent. Even social-media stocks (not named Facebook) gained Friday, with LinkedIn rising 3.4 percent, Zynga increasing 1.1 percent and Yelp moving up 1 percent.

Silicon Valley tech stocks

Up: VMware, NetApp, Splunk, Advanced Micro Devices, Oracle, Symantec, Juniper, Nvidia, Cisco (CSCO), Intuit (INTU), HP, Electronic Arts (ERTS), Adobe (ADBE), SunPower (SPWRA), LinkedIn, Intel (INTC), eBay (EBAY), Google (GOOG), Apple

Down: Facebook, Tesla

The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index: Up 85.56, or 3 percent, to 2,935.05

The blue chip Dow Jones industrial average: Up 277.83, or 2.2 percent, to 12,880.09

And the widely watched Standard & Poor's 500 index: Up 33.12, or 2.49 percent, to 1,362.16

Texans await ruling on federal health care law

DALLAS (AP) ? The federal government may have to implement a major provision of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul in Texas since the state's conservative leaders are steadfastly opposed to it. But one state agency has fulfilled parts of the law and said it's prepared to move forward if the law is upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Gov. Rick Perry and other Republican leaders have blasted the measure since Obama signed it in March 2010, though they've offered few solutions on how to drive down health care costs if the high court revokes the law in a ruling expected by Thursday. A quarter of Texas' population ? about 6.2 million people ? is uninsured.

Texas, among several states challenging the law, has lagged in implementing some of the law's provisions, including setting up a state health care exchange that would serve as an insurance marketplace for people and small businesses to buy coverage. Texas received a federal grant to help plan the network, but has shown little evidence of implementing the plan.

"We haven't pursued it, there are no plans to implement an exchange as our focus has been on efforts to defeat Obamacare," said Perry spokeswoman Catherine Frazier.

The Texas Health and Human Services Commission will be responsible for the Medicaid expansion under the law, and it says the federal government still needs to provide some necessary details.

"Whether (the law) is upheld or struck down or something in between, we're going to need more guidance from the federal government on how to implement some of these really complex changes the law makes," department spokeswoman Stephanie Goodman said.

"But assuming they get us that guidance ... we've been planning all this time for the various contingencies and will be ready to act, whatever the court decides."

Goodman said the agency has already met deadlines for some requirements, such as implementing a tobacco cessation benefit for pregnant women on Medicaid.

In addition, at least 5,700 Texans are participating in a federally mandated insurance plan for those with pre-existing conditions, though the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is running that program instead of Texas.

A health care advocate says the state is far from ready to implement all the law's provisions if the Supreme Court upholds the law.

"(Texas has) a lot of work to do," said Anne Dunkelberg, associate director for the Center for Public Policy Priorities, an institute focused on improving public policies for low- and moderate-income Texans. She said the state "has done a few things to prepare but put some things on hold."

For example, she said, the state has not picked a minimum standard for health care services that every insurance plan must cover starting in 2014. It also doesn't have in place laws to help the Texas Department of Insurance enforce the law.

She also noted that the state has not addressed creation of the health care exchange, even though every state is required to submit a plan to the federal government by Nov. 16.

The federal government will implement the system by 2014 if Texas does not comply in time, said U.S. Department of Health and Human Services spokesman Keith Maley.

According to the federal agency's website, the Texas Department of Insurance received a grant to help plan the exchange.

But Texas Department of Insurance spokesman John Greeley would not elaborate on its preparations. He would only say the agency was "working closely with state leadership to consider the range of options and implications for the state while monitoring litigation that challenges the constitutionality of the federal reform laws."

Meanwhile, state leaders continue to lobby against the law.

Perry said Tuesday at an event in a Dallas suburb that states should be allowed to come up with the best programs for their citizens and make the private sector as free as they can. Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott contends Congress can't force Americans to buy a product and predicted more litigation if the Supreme Court upholds the law.

Neither offered specific plans on how the state could help provide more affordable health care. And some residents doubt they would be able to.

Rochelle "Shellie" Lyon, 70, of Franklin, said she will be closely watching what the Supreme Court does. She said she and her husband have appointments Thursday for preventative checkups, which are covered by Medicare under the new law. She said that her husband also has benefited from a rebate to help cover prescription drug costs of those that fell into the "donut hole."

"I was on razor-edge when the bill was passed," she said. "I cared so much about seeing a comprehensive health plan go through. I'll be on pins and needles seeing what the Supreme Court does, but I'm not at all optimistic."

Autoresponders Generate Online Profits ? SMB Advice & Tips

by: Lewis Leake

If you ask online marketer how to convert website visitors into buyers,

most will give you the same answer: the sales are in the follow-up.

It?s much more than just increasing your traffic volume. After all, most

of your visitors won?t decide to purchase your products or your services

when they first visit your website. But that?s not to say that they won?t

be interested in your offer tomorrow or next week, or that they won?t be

interested in future offers.

Therefore, it is necessary to get your visitor?s email addresses so that

you can inform them of current and upcoming offers. You do this by using

an opt-in system that invites them to subscribe to your mailing list. By

gathering their names and email addresses, with their permission of

course, you are now able to contact them periodically with information,

usually by sending them an ezine as well as an occasional freebie.

There are no problems as long as you?re only dealing with ten or twenty

subscribers, as you could just email them individually. However, such

numbers aren?t going to make you many sales. You should aim for a mailing

list that could reach into the thousands. That number of subscribers

would make it difficult for you to prepare individual emails for each

name on your list.

The basis of an ideal mailing list, therefore, is an effective

autoresponder system that provides the power and flexibility to email

your subscribers in a timely and efficient manner.

A mailing list of considerable size powered by a good autoresponder

system consistently provides earnings for many Internet marketers. A lot

of online businessmen make significant profits from their mailing lists

alone.

Okay, but what is an autoresponder system? An autoresponder system is

like a digital secretary. It takes care of your subscribers by providing

an opt-in system that allows visitors to subscribe to your mailing list.

An autoresponder system also takes care of the sending of emails to your

subscriber base.

You can prepare your messages in advance, program them into the

autoresponder, and preset the intervals by which the messages are

delivered. You can even separate your subscribers into various groups.

You could have a group for those who have not yet placed an order, for

example. You could have another grouping for those who have already made

a purchase. This allows you to use two different marketing approaches in

dealing with each of the groups.

A good autoresponder system can help you build trust in your products or

services. With a good autoresponder, you can also provide an efficient

technical support program. If your subscribers email you a question about

one of your products, for example, you could preset the autoresponder to

reply with a general FAQ to send them the information.

Not all autoresponders are designed the same and much care should be

taken in choosing the right one for your particular needs. Here are some

questions you should ask before you decide on a particular autoresponder

service:

* How many accounts can you create? Some business plans might

require that you have different accounts for different products.

* How many lists can you build? There are also some business plans where

you might need different lists for different groups of subscribers.

* How many follow-up messages can you preset? Do you need a lot of

follow-up messages or do you know yet? Quite a few autoresponder services

provide for unllimited follow-ups.

* How many subscribers can the system hold? And also, how many

subscribers can the system respond to?

* How much customization is allowed? You need to be able to personalize

your email messages with each subscriber?s name and other customizable

information.

* How does the system gather subscriber information? The process should

be simple and convenient; otherwise, the visitor will not subscribe.

* Will you be able to send your messages in html and text formats? Most

autoresponder services allow both formats.

* Will you be able to track your subscribers for the purpose of target

marketing? This my or may not be important to you.

* Is the scheduling system fully automated and flexible enough for your

current and future needs?

* Is the autoresponder easy to use? Do they have a demo area so that you

can try it out?

Now, does the autoresponder service you are considering provide answers

to all of the above questions? If so and if it is offered at a reasonable

price, then you should grab the deal as soon as you can.

Remember, if you?re running an online business, a good autoresponder

should be one of your primary investments. It could be the key to an

excellent conversion rate, more sales and more profits.

In Iran a wedding is a big deal to many families, traditionally it has been seen as a time of celebration. However, in the past quarter of a century you see a sea change in the mentality of the parents? generation and the distancing between themselves and their offspring.

Growing up outside of this country and only having just ventured into the hot house in the past 12 months, I noticed some slight variations in how the wedding is perceived by all counterparts. The general consensus in Tehran is that if your parents have got the money, spend it; furthering that point, if your parents have got a bit of money, spend that too.

I have been round family friends houses in the past 12 months and been entertained by what I thought was a BMW 3 Series commercial only to later find out that it was actually a wedding video of the husband driving to pick the wife up for the ceremony. In all I think the family spent more on the wedding video than the actual ceremony.

The Meetings ? Khastegari

The history of the Iranian wedding is like the Iranian New Year, it is as old as the country itself, and traditionally the proposed groom?s family would visit the proposed bride?s family and hammer out a deal as whether to agree that these two poor souls should be cast in matrimony. The Khastegari ? which I may add has two editions, one in each family?s home so the other can check the opposing family out to make sure they are of the same class and so on ? is a set event in this soap opera.

One must understand that Iranian culture is all about ?never losing face? and with the creation over the last two decades of a huge middle class, that message has taken an ugly turn in terms of ?Keeping up with the Kardashians?. I use this term loosely due to the closest similarity to visuals of Iranian wedding culture outside of Iran would be the Armenian family of California.

Mehriye & Jaheezieh

The mehriye is the offer from the groom?s family to the bride-to-be family of ?Sekkeh? or otherwise known to us lay people as gold; traditionally gold sovereigns would be offered and an amount agreed on. Usually these days in the first or second khasatagari the groom would offer an amount and the family would either accept or throw the baby out with the bath water. This in recent times has been an absolute nightmare to couples wishing to get married as the price of gold as we all know has sky rocketed. Hence people have poured their savings into gold, bumping the price up by awesome amounts, pretty much pricing anyone who isn?t a millionaire out of marriage.

The jaheezieh is another minefield for the bride-to-be?s family. Traditionally the bride?s family would kit out any new home that the groom would buy. Well all I can say, washing machines in Iran are very expensive and we agreed that I have all the necessary stuff apart from the washing machine, so Indesit it is!

The Blood Test

Although a newly introduced tradition, over the past decade or so this has become an integral part of getting married, this is the one thing that can put a spanner in the works and crush all the hopes of those who would wish to marry. To the outsider this seems a pretty strict system to check those who would like to marry and have children at a later date, but there is logic in the idea. The test covers a host of different possible diseases contracted or otherwise. It also includes a small genetics test to prove whether your children would have a high chance of a disease like say down syndrome. If this is the case then as far as I understand the two must part ways and never see each other again.

Aghd (Wedding document signing event)

The contract signing for the wedding is usually done before the ceremony of Aghd, so that the ceremony can flow naturally. When the groom signs the marriage contract, he legally agrees to provide the bride with a mehriye. The amount of mehriye is restated during the wedding ceremony. He is also asked whether his wife can divorce on 10 points which the cleric speaks out in front, for example. ?If you become a drug addict, can she divorce you??

The Party

Generally this is the big event, after the signing of the marriage certificate the newly married couple would head to a wedding hall or a garden somewhere in the vicinity of the families? homes. This event is the big party time where families would get together to celebrate the union of marriage. This in itself is a great thing but can pretty much bankrupt any father of the groom due to the numbers of people who come.

After the event

Our party was small, no more than 30 people, and my father generously flew over to save our bank accounts from total annihilation. Weddings are wonderful events, I truly will treasure my memories of the day for the rest of my life, but it leaves me with foreboding for a country on the squeeze economically and a burgeoning youth population just trying to progress with their lives.

Food Geek is the Ultimate Foodie ? Vegas Vitality Nutrition

This week, Las Vegas is taking the term ?Foodie? to the next level at the International Food Technologist (IFT) Expo. I am a ?Food Geek?. IFT?s Student Association was giving out name tag flags if you expressed your true ?food-geek-ness.? Boy, did I meet their criteria: product and recipe creator, food writer, expert in nutrition (dietitian), expert in food security (masters degree), food spokesperson, and overall Foodie (love to eat good food). My life truly revolves around food and I love my food like a kid loves cake.

?

Even with all of the amazing culinary creations and food science developments on display, I was reminded that the IFT Expo celebrates much more than the creation of good tasting food. With more than 80 countries represented, it truly takes an army of food geeks to ensure food security, safety, and supply to the masses. This is best explained by the new video that IFT has recently released: World without Food Science. Please view and share your thoughts!

Federal court upholds EPA's global warming rules

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A federal appeals court on Tuesday upheld the first-ever regulations aimed at reducing the gases blamed for global warming, handing down perhaps the most significant decision on the issue since a 2007 Supreme Court ruling that greenhouse gases could be controlled as air pollutants.

The rules, which had been challenged by industry groups and several states, will reduce emissions of six heat-trapping gases from large industrial facilities such as factories and power plants, as well as from automobile tailpipes.

A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington said that the Environmental Protection Agency was "unambiguously correct" in using existing federal law to address global warming, denying two of the challenges to four separate regulations and dismissing the others.

Michael Gerrard, director of the Center for Climate Change Law at Columbia University, said no one expected the "complete slam dunk" issued by the court Tuesday, and said the decision was exceeded in importance only by the Supreme Court ruling five years ago.

It also lands during a presidential election year where there are sharp differences between the two candidates when it comes to how best to deal with global warming.

President Barack Obama's administration has come under fierce criticism from Republicans, including Mitt Romney, for pushing ahead with the regulations after Congress failed to pass climate legislation, and after the Bush administration resisted such steps. In 2009, the EPA concluded that greenhouse gases endanger human health and welfare, triggering controls on automobiles and other large sources. But the administration has always said it preferred to address global warming through a new law.

Carol Browner, Obama's former energy and climate adviser, said the decision "should put an end, once and for all, to any questions about the EPA's legal authority to protect us from dangerous industrial carbon pollution," adding that it was a "devastating blow" to those who challenge the scientific evidence of climate change.

EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson called the ruling a "strong validation" of the approach the agency has taken.

The court "found that EPA followed both the science and the law in taking common-sense, reasonable actions to address the very real threat of climate change by limiting greenhouse gas pollution from the largest sources," Jackson said in a statement.

At a town hall meeting in New Hampshire last year Romney, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, said it was a mistake for the EPA to be involved in reducing emissions of carbon dioxide, the chief greenhouse gas.

"My view is that the EPA is getting into carbon and regulating carbon has gone beyond the original intent of the legislation, and I would not go there," he said.

The court on Tuesday seemed to disagree with Romney's assessment when it denied two challenges to the administration's rules, including one arguing that the agency erred in concluding greenhouse gases endanger human health and welfare. Lawyers for the industry groups and states argued that the EPA should have considered the policy implications of regulating heat-trapping gases along with the science. They also questioned the agency's reliance on a body of scientific evidence that they said included significant uncertainties.

The judges ? Chief Judge David Sentelle, who was appointed by Republican President Ronald Reagan, and David Tatel and Judith Rogers, both appointed by Democrat Bill Clinton ? flatly rejected those arguments.

"This is how science works," the unsigned opinion said. "EPA is not required to re-prove the existence of the atom every time it approaches a scientific question."

Industry groups vowed to fight on.

"Today's ruling is a setback for businesses facing damaging regulations from the EPA," said Jay Timmons, president and CEO of the National Association of Manufacturers. "We will be considering all of our legal options when it comes to halting these devastating regulations. The debate to address climate change should take place in the U.S. Congress and should foster economic growth and job creation, not impose additional burdens on businesses."

Environmentalists, meanwhile, called it a landmark decision for global warming policy, which has been repeatedly targeted by the Republican-controlled House.

"Today's ruling by the court confirms that EPA's common-sense solutions to address climate pollution are firmly anchored in science and law," said Fred Krupp, president of the Environmental Defense Fund.

The court also dismissed complaints against two other regulations dealing with pollution from new factories and other industrial facilities. The plaintiffs had argued that the EPA misused the Clean Air Act by only requiring controls on the largest sources, when the law explicitly states that much smaller sources should also be covered.

The judges, when presented with these arguments in February, cautioned the industry groups and states to be careful what they wished for. If EPA chose to follow the letter of the law, they said, greenhouse gas regulations would place even more of a burden on industry and other businesses.

Lawyers for the various states said that if that were to occur, Congress would pass a law to stop it.

Citing a "Schoolhouse Rock" video, the judges in their opinion reminded petitioners that "It's not easy to become a law." They even provided a link to the popular video that explains how bills become laws.

"We have serious doubts as to whether ... it is ever 'likely' that Congress will enact legislation at all," they said.

Scientists find new primitive mineral in meteorite

Wednesday, June 27, 2012

In 1969, an exploding fireball tore through the sky over Mexico, scattering thousands of pieces of meteorite across the state of Chihuahua. More than 40 years later, the Allende meteorite is still serving the scientific community as a rich source of information about the early stages of our solar system's evolution. Recently, scientists from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) discovered a new mineral embedded in the space rock?one they believe to be among the oldest minerals formed in the solar system.

Dubbed panguite, the new titanium oxide is named after Pan Gu, the giant from ancient Chinese mythology who established the world by separating yin from yang to create the earth and the sky. The mineral and the mineral name have been approved by the International Mineralogical Association's Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification. A paper outlining the discovery and the properties of this new mineral will be published in the July issue of the journal American Mineralogist, and is available online now.

"Panguite is an especially exciting discovery since it is not only a new mineral, but also a material previously unknown to science," says Chi Ma, a senior scientist and director of the Geological and Planetary Sciences division's Analytical Facility at Caltech and corresponding author on the paper.

The Allende meteorite is the largest carbonaceous chondrite?a diverse class of primitive meteorites?ever found on our planet and is considered by many the best-studied meteorite in history. As a result of an ongoing nanomineralogy investigation of primitive meteorites?which Ma has been leading since 2007?nine new minerals, including panguite, have been found in the Allende meteorite. Some of those new finds include the minerals allendeite, hexamolybdenum, tistarite, and kangite. Nanomineralogy looks at tiny particles of minerals and the minuscule features within those minerals.

"The intensive studies of objects in this meteorite have had a tremendous influence on current thinking about processes, timing, and chemistry in the primitive solar nebula and small planetary bodies," says coauthor George Rossman, the Eleanor and John R. McMillan Professor of Mineralogy at Caltech.

Panguite was observed first under a scanning electron microscope in an ultra-refractory inclusion embedded in the meteorite. Refractory inclusions are among the first solid objects formed in our solar system, dating back to before the formation of Earth and the other planets. "Refractory" refers to the fact that these inclusions contain minerals that are stable at high temperatures and in extreme environments, which attests to their likely formation as primitive, high-temperature liquids produced by the solar nebula.

According to Ma, studies of panguite and other newly discovered refractory minerals are continuing in an effort to learn more about the conditions under which they formed and subsequently evolved. "Such investigations are essential to understand the origins of our solar system," he says.
