COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. -- Halloween?can be a sweet holiday for kids, but it can be a bit spooky for the family pet.

Between the strange people in?costumes and the night's?haunting sounds, dogs and cats can become fearful and sometimes aggressive.

"When they come to the door, and there is a strange person standing there in a costume," Joseph Vanloon, owner of?Loony Groom?in Colorado Springs, said, "they can become fearful and bite. It could also lunge at or take off, so it is a good idea to keep them secluded or away from trick-or-treaters."

Vanloon said it is also a good idea to show your pet your costume before Halloween night so they are not as frightened by your change of appearance.

"Have your kids put on their costumes and say, 'Hey, this is me,'" he said. "Put on and take off your masks, that way they know it is you. Just don't let them chew on your costume. There can be toxic material on some costumes."

The?American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals?also has a few tips to keep your pet and your family safe on Halloween:

1. No tricks, no treats: That bowl of candy is for trick-or-treaters, not for Scruffy and Fluffy. Chocolate in all forms?especially dark or baking chocolate?can be very dangerous for dogs and cats.

2. All but the most social dogs and cats should be kept in a separate room away from the front door during peak trick-or-treating hours. Too many strangers can be scary and stressful for pets.

3. A carved pumpkin certainly is festive, but do exercise caution if you choose to add a candle. Pets can easily knock a lit pumpkin over and cause a fire. Curious kittens especially run the risk of getting burned or singed by candle flames.

4. When opening the door for trick-or-treaters, take care that your cat or dog doesn't dart outside.

5. Always make sure your dog or cat has proper identification. If for any reason your pet escapes and becomes lost, a collar and tags and/or a microchip can be a lifesaver, increasing the chances that he or she will be returned to you

Cro Cop loses final fight at UFC 137, Nelson uses belly and power to finish him off

LAS VEGAS - Mirko Filipovic put on dozens of tremendous shows for fans of mixed martials, so the ending at UFC 137 was fitting. The 37-year-old brought it and tried to slug it out with Roy Nelson, but the younger fighter's well-rounded game took over in the second and he scored a TKO win at the 1:30 mark of third at UFC 137.

"Cro Cop" was one of the most feared fighters in the world during his time with PRIDE fighting in Japan. His run with the UFC was less than stellar, but the fans never lost their for the Crotian kickboxer. Even tonight, the Las Vegas crowd went nuts anytime Cro Cop landed.

"This is going to be my final fight. I didn't make a goodbye victory," a sad Cro Cop told UFC analyst Joe Rogan. "Roy was just better tonight. I want to thank all you guys, especially UFC fans."

[Related: UFC 137: Penn, 'Cro Cop' set to retire after losses]

Cro Cop (27-10) was very much in the fight until the middle of the second round. Two minutes in, he rocked Nelson with a shot and then got off 20-25 unanswered shots. Nelson covered up and survived, and then scored a very important takedown with 2:35 left.

Nelson quickly moved to side control where he worked for the dominant crucifix position. Once he got it with less than 45 seconds left, he pounded away on the helpless Cro Cop. Nelson, who came into this fight about 15-17 pounds less than previous fights, still has a good-sized belly. He used that to his advantage as he smothered the 37-year-0ld. Cro Cop survived the round, but when he rose to his feet his face was all marked up.

In the third, his legs weren't there and he drilled by a straight right. Cro Cop went into retreat mode. A little over minute into the round, he got dropped by a left. Nelson jumped on top, got his hook in and flattened him out. He threw four or five big bombs to the side of Cro Cop's head and it was stopped.

Teen pulled from quake rubble in Turkey

Rescuers, working under floodlights, pulled a 13-year-old boy alive from the rubble of a collapsed apartment building early Friday, more than 100 hours after a massive earthquake leveled many buildings in eastern Turkey, killing at least 570 people.

A picture by the state-run Anatolia news agency showed a rescue team carrying, Ferhat Tokay, out of the debris, wearing a neck brace. In other pictures from a field hospital, he appeared conscious and looking at his rescuers.

Tokay's rescue came 108 hours after Sunday's 7.2-magnitude earthquake, the agency said.

The agency said the boy was injured but did not give further details. The collapsed building from which Tokay was rescued was in Ecris, the town worst hit by the quake.

In addition to the dead, the temblor injured 2,300 others, according to the country's disaster management, AFAD, website updated Thursday evening. Thousands of homeless in tents were struggling in the bitter cold as rain and snow brought on more hardship.

Television footage on Thursday showed a rescue team cheering and clapping as another young man, wearing a red sweater and strapped to a stretcher, was also carried out of the debris. His eyes were shut most of the time, but he opened them at one point.

The Anatolia agency identified the man as 18-year-old Imdat Padak. He was rescued by an Azerbaijani crew.

Padak was flown to the nearby city of Van and was dehydrated, but in good condition, according to the news agency.

Story: Teachers, teen pulled from Turkey quake rubble

Emergency officials said 187 have been rescued from the rubble. About 2,000 buildings have been destroyed and authorities declared another 3,700 buildings unfit for habitation.

More aid began to reach survivors, with Turkish authorities delivering more tents after acknowledging distribution problems that included aid trucks being looted even before they reached Ercis.

Families who did snag precious aid tents shared them with others. But some people spent a fourth night outdoors huddled under blankets in front of campfires, either waiting for news of the missing or keeping watch over damaged homes.

Some blamed the ruling AK party for a slow response and accused officials of handing aid to supporters, after standing in long lines only to be told there were no tents left. Others said profiteers were hoarding tents and reselling them.

"Everyone is getting sick and wet. We have been waiting in line for four days like this and still nothing. It gets to our turn and they say they have run out," said Fetih Zengin, 38, a real estate agent whose house was badly damaged in Ercis, a town of 100,000 that was hardest hit by Sunday's quake.

"We slept under a piece of plastic erected on some wood boards we found. We have 10 children in our family, they are getting sick. Everyone needs a tent, snow is coming. It's a disaster."

Ergun Ozmen, 37, was carrying loaves of bread after queuing for food. "People are taking 10 tents and selling them. It's a disgrace. I slept in the municipal park all night in the rain. My shoes are filled with water. I only registered to get a tent this morning as I have been busy burying the dead," he said.

Looking ahead, Turkey's weather agency predicted intermittent snowfall for the next three days.

Foreign assistance began arriving after Turkey said it would accept help to house survivors through the winter. Israel, which has a troubled political relationship with Turkey, sent emergency housing units, blankets and clothing. Germany also dispatched supplies, including tent heating units. Russia and Ukraine also contributed.

Saudi King Abdullah ordered a $50 million donation to help Turkey deal with the aftermath of the quake, the official Saudi Press Agency said.

Syrians who had fled across the border to Turkey to escape violence in their homeland donated blood for the injured, the Anatolia news agency reported.

Search and rescue operations ended in the provincial capital of Van, state-run TRT television said. But searchers in bright orange raincoats continued digging through debris in Ercis, 55 miles (90 kilometers) to the north.

They pulled out the bodies of two dead teenage sisters and their parents who were holding hands, and a mother clutching her baby boy, according to media reports.

Two teachers and a university student were rescued from ruined buildings Wednesday. One of the teachers later died in the hospital.

Some media reports had said rescuers pulled out a 19-year-old alive from the rubble on Thursday, but Mustafa Ozden, the head of the team that brought out the young man, told The Associated Press that he was rescued on Tuesday, not Thursday.

The region has been rocked by hundreds of aftershocks. On Thursday, a 5.4-magnitude tremor hit the neighboring province of Hakkari, sending people rushing out of buildings in panic. No damage was reported but NTV television said some people were slightly injured trying to escape through windows.

Turkish television stations, meanwhile, organized a joint aid telethon that brought in just under 62 million Turkish Lira ($37 million).

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

StumbleUpon (for iPad)

When you?re in the mood to kick back with your iPad and do some Web surfing, do you ever get the feeling that there may be sites out there you should know about, but don?t? If so, you?re probably correct. With millions?of sites on the worldwide web, finding the best ones for your interests is no easy task. Sure, there?s Google and Bing, but sometimes you want site suggestions without having to come up with search terms. StumbleUpon, founded in 2001, helps eliminate that challenge by letting desktop users find cool links and tailoring the content based on subject matter and level of interest. The discovery service now comes to iOS as a free iPad app that lets users of Apple?s slate find, ban, like, and share pages, video, and photo. Well-designed, stable, and boasting an intuitive interface that surpasses the desktop version, StumbleUpon for iPad takes the chore out of finding fresh Web content?even more so than bookmarking sites like Digg and Reddit. It?s easily one of the best iPad apps to hit the App Store this year.

Service and Social Networking Setup
StumbleUpon isn?t a new service, but the iPad app is the definitive version of the service. The iPad?s 9.7-inch touchscreen display (which is roughly the size of a book, newspaper, or magazine) is an excellent venue to explore the Web with StumbleUpon?s app, as it lets you kick back on a sofa or relax in a bed while reading?no monitors, mice, laptops, or desktops necessary. After leaping from site to site on the iPad?initiating each leap by bring a finger to the ?Stumble!? icon?I found the desktop version clunky when I returned to my PC. StumbleUpon on the iPad is a terrific experience.

When you first fire up StumbleUpon on your iPad, you?re presented with the option to log in with an existing StumbleUpon account, sign in with your Facebook credentials, or create a new StumbleUpon account. After signing in, I granted the app permission to send notifications, use my location, and find my StumbleUpon friends (culled from either Address Book, Facebook, or Twitter). This let me see the Web pages, photos, videos, and profile information that they?ve shared. The app even gave me the opportunity to invite non-StumbleUpon users into the fold. Overall, the setup process was swift and simple.

The Adventure Begins
The Home screen features a dark black background with the StumbleUpon logo and various content categories highlighted in a light-gray font. The upper-left portion of the screen is a help box that explains the gist of the StumbleUpon experience: ?Each tap of the ?Stumble? button takes you to a new discovery.?

So tap I did. My first Stumble took me to the Bronx Zoo?s ?Boo at the Zoo? Halloween celebration page; a second brought a page about World War II dogfighting to my attention. I gave interesting pages the thumbs up by tapping the ?I like it!? icon in the upper-right corner of the screen (this helps the app learn your interests and appropriately tailor content that it delivers). To the left of that icon is a thumb?s down icon that let me ban a page. You can return a positive or negative vote back to neutral by tapping the icon again. Overall, I was quite pleased with the content that StumbleUpon pushed to my iPad?it was well within the interest categories that I selected when I created my account?and found the discovery process more passive and relaxing than Digg or Reddit?s as pages came to me.

Tapping the sharing icon opened a drop-down box that let you share a page via e-mail, Facebook, Twitter, Google Reader, and other avenues. A gray bar above the content area displayed the name of the StumbleUpon user who liked the presented pages, images, and video. When I tapped a user?s name, StumbleUpon opened that person?s profile page which displayed favorite links, followers, and a button that lets you stumble only within that person?s favorites?a nice touch. I found it especially useful when rifling through a user profile that contained many links. Tapping ?Comments & Info? displayed the number of users who liked a link and the comments left. You can also leave comments of your own.

StumbleUpon ?lead me to dozens of interesting reads, both obscure and mainstream, that I may have never found had I not had the app. Everyday Mysteries and Dark Room are just two of the manysites I?ve stumbled upon that are now part of my daily rotation.

Customizing Content
You can filter the content that?s delivered to the iPad by tapping ?All Interests,? to open a drop-down menu. There you can choose to view content only from StumbleUpon friends, or a particular media type such as photos, videos, or news. Tapping ?Interest? at the bottom of the drop-down menu showed the subjects that you added when you created an account. I wanted to remove a few of the categories I added, but there wasn?t any obvious way to delete them. I swiped subjects, pressed and held categories?nothing.? I tapped ?Add Interests? in a moment of curiosity, which let me not only add new categories (such as Action Movies, Quotes, and Weight Loss), but? swipe to delete pre-selected items. I was completely befuddled why the option to remove content would be buried in an area where you add content; ?Add Interests? should be renamed ?Edit? (as it is on the home screen) to cut confusion.

If you long to explore the breadth of the Web, StumbleUpon for iPad is a near-perfect companion. It brings unfamiliar, but interesting, links to your attention in a way that search engines cannot?after all, when was the last time that you performed a search and ventured beyond page two? StumbleUpon very nicely adds to the iPad reading experience, making it an app that?s very worthy of our Editors? Choice Award.

Windows XP turns 10, still thrives

By Suzanne Choney

Ten years ago today, Oct. 25, Microsoft released Windows XP, which became one of its most popular flavors of the Windows operating system?? largely because what came after it, Windows Vista, was so terrible.

And while many of us will be looking to migrate from Windows 7 to Windows 8 when it becomes available?? no date is set, but it could be late next summer?? there are still plenty of folks using XP. (And you probably know this, but Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal.)

In StatCounter's chart, above, in the United States, XP still ranks as the top operating system, followed by Windows 7 and?? gulp?? Windows Vista. Vista was security-laden to the point of sluggishness and resulted in lots of user frustration. Microsoft remains so sensitive about the slowness issue from Vista's days that it has made a big point of saying that Windows 8 will boot super fast.

Microsoft is still providing "extended" (that means: you pay) tech support for XP patches and security updates through April 2014.

Globally, XP's reach is even larger than in the U.S.:

"Happy Tenth Birthday, Windows XP. Now Please Die," is the headline Tuesday from NetworkWorld, which says that the operating system's "longevity has allowed XP to take root and outlast its welcome. Consumers have been quicker to ditch XP for Windows 7 while businesses hem and haw and slowly test a decade's-worth of custom apps on Windows 7. The current economic situation isn't helping one iota as budgets are constrained from Wall St. to Main St."

And while budgets are a big factor, so is comfort level. Many who have stayed with XP just find it like a well-worn slipper, not ready to be thrown out and too comfy to give up. If you're a Windows user, which version do you have? Take our poll above.

U.S. defense chief skeptical on North Korea talks (Reuters)

SEOUL (Reuters) ? U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Thursday he was skeptical about the fate of the latest diplomatic push with North Korea and called on China to do more to pressure Pyongyang over its nuclear programs.

North Korea's foreign ministry said this week's second round of talks with the United States in Geneva had helped deepen each side's understanding about pending issues, and that they had agreed further confidence-building talks.

The Geneva meeting, which came after a first round talks in New York in July and two rounds of dialogue between the two Koreas, was aimed at restarting wider talks on ending Pyongyang's atomic activities in return for economic aid.

But Panetta, on his first trip to South Korea since taking over the Pentagon in July, said it was not clear to him where the talks were headed. He renewed warnings that the North was a serious threat.

"There's an indication that some progress was made (in Geneva) but that they haven't arrived at any agreements and we're not sure where those talks are headed at this point," Panetta said.

"And so for that reason, I guess the word skepticism would be in order at this time as to what may or may not happen in those discussions."

The North said its position for resuming regional aid-for-disarmament talks remained the same -- that dialogue should restart without any conditions.

Washington and Seoul stood firm that the North live up to its past denuclearization pledges, including pulling the shutters down on its uranium enrichment facility and allowing the return of international inspectors to verify the halt.

Should Pyongyang again find engagement has run its course, analysts fear it could test another nuclear weapon or pick new fights with Seoul. North Korea was blamed for killing some 50 South Koreans in two attacks near their contested maritime border in 2010.

The North also unveiled a uranium enrichment facility last year that gives it a second route to making an atomic bomb.

"We always have to be vigilant in the way we approach North Korea because there is a history here of accommodation and provocation," Panetta said.

U.S. military officials briefed reporters traveling with Panetta earlier in the day, warning that Pyongyang continued to make progress in its missile program as well as cyber warfare and other capabilities -- even as they said the extent of that progress was often difficult to measure.

CHINA - DO MORE

Panetta, at the end of a swing through Asia that included trips to Japan and Indonesia, said China, North Korea's closest ally, needed to do more to pressure Pyongyang to prove it was "serious about eliminating their nuclear program."

"There are moments when we think that they are urging North Korea to engage. But frankly, I think that China can do more to try to get North Korea to do the right thing," Panetta said.

At the same time, Panetta acknowledged that Beijing's influence was limited, saying that "sometimes North Korea doesn't pay attention" to Chinese encouragement for Pyongyang to engage.

Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang said during a visit to Seoul Thursday that the Beijing would continue to try to help reconcile the neighbors. He added Pyongyang was willing to seek dialogue with South Korea and ease tensions on the peninsula.

Meanwhile, the pace of diplomacy between the six states involved in the regional talks has picked up sharply, with U.S. diplomat Kurt Campbell briefing officials in Seoul and the two Korean nuclear envoys visiting Russia.

UBS salvages Q3 profit with one-off gain (Reuters)

ZURICH (Reuters) ? Swiss bank UBS AG (UBSN.VX) (UBS.N) overcame a 1.8 billion Swiss franc ($2 billion) rogue trading loss to post a smaller than forecast fall in third quarter net profit on Tuesday as its core wealth management business performed well.

Managing money for rich clients held up well, with strong inflows to the bank's Americas unit, despite tough economic conditions and the bad publicity of the trading scandal, made public two weeks before the quarter ended.

Although net profit for the third quarter fell by 39 percent to 1.018 billion francs at UBS, it beat average analyst forecasts for 276 million, after big one-off items flagged earlier this month had a more positive impact than expected.

Adjusted for one-off items, pre-tax profit was 588 million francs, beating most forecasts, analysts said.

"A strong performance in wealth management operations, offset by a worse than expected investment banking performance," said Espirito Santo analyst Andrew Lim.

"The underlying operating profit figure is not as strong as at first glance."

UBS shares rose as much as 3 percent but reversed their gains to trade flat at 11.14 francs at 1407 GMT, outpacing a 1.9 percent weaker European banking index (.SX7P), down along with most other shares.

Interim Chief Executive Sergio Ermotti, appointed after Oswald Gruebel quit over the trading loss, described the quarter as "very challenging for both the industry and the bank" and said the fourth quarter had started with "increased evidence of strain to the financial system."

In the absence of a resolution of the euro zone debt crisis and an improved U.S. economic outlook, "current market conditions and trading activity are unlikely to improve materially, potentially creating headwinds for growth in revenues and net new money," the bank said.

INVESTMENT BANK RESTRUCTURING

Ermotti said he was finalizing plans to restructure the troubled UBS investment bank ahead of an investor day on November 17, but the broad strategy was already clear.

"Our goal is to continue to be the preeminent wealth management franchise in the world together with a very strong presence in Switzerland," he told a call for analysts.

"We want to have a strong, profitable, focused investment bank and asset management businesses to support this strategy."

Chief Financial Officer Tom Naratil said the bank would only give details next month of any possible new job cuts from the restructuring as well as details on when it plans to resume paying a dividend and how it will build its capital.

Naratil said an internal investigation into the trading scandal showed its controls had not been effective, with shortcomings related to confirmation with counterparties. He said further disciplinary action might be necessary.

Earlier this month, the bank accepted the resignation of the two co-heads of global equities, Francois Gouws and Yassine Bouhara, over the unauthorised trades.

Kweku Adoboli, who is accused of running up the trades, made no application for bail last week and will appear for a plea and case management hearing next month.

The bank, which already said the scandal had not resulted in many clients withdrawing their money in the quarter, said inflows into its Swiss and international wealth management business fell to a disappointing 3.8 billion francs.

While it saw continued inflows in Asia-Pacific and other emerging markets as well as from the ultra wealthy, the European offshore business reported net outflows due to pressure on Switzerland's tax haven status.

But it saw a better-than-expected 4 billion francs of net inflows in its Americas wealth management business, as CEO Robert McCann, a former Merrill Lynch executive hired two years ago, started to see his turnaround strategy bear fruit.

UBS described the U.S. inflows as a "clear vote of confidence" and Naratil said they had been strongly fueled by client advisors with UBS for more than a year, although he declined to comment on global client trends in the current quarter after the trading loss.

"Wealth management has not blown out the light this quarter," said Kepler analyst Dirk Becker. "We will see how the trading incident might have further affected the group's reputation only in the coming quarters."

ACCOUNTING GAIN

Rival Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE) also reported forecast-beating third-quarter profits on Tuesday, as retail banking and asset management offset a slump in investment banking, but similarly warned that the near-term outlook was highly dependent on the resolution of the euro zone debt crisis.

UBS said a 1.765 billion franc gain on the value of its own debt and 722 million from the sale of treasury-related investments helped make up for the trading loss and 387 million francs of restructuring costs it booked in the quarter.

This accounting gain -- which occurs because the bank could profit from buying back its own bonds at lower levels -- also gave a big boost this quarter to profits at most U.S. banks.

However, UBS results also mirrored their U.S. peers in showing declining bond and stock revenues as sovereign debt worries spiraled in the three months to September.

The investment bank posted a pre-tax loss of 650 million francs as it said revenues fell across all business areas due to the difficult market conditions and the strong Swiss franc.

The foreign exchange business made the best of the turmoil, with revenues more than doubling on volatility and good client flows, but it was not enough to make up for losses elsewhere.

"Q3 results once again confirmed the need for urgent action in UBS' investment banking businesses especially given further regulatory and structural challenges," said Sarasin analyst Rainer Skierka.

Ermotti said a program announced in August to cut 3,500 jobs from the bank's some 66,000 staff was on track but said the bank would remain vigilant on costs, echoing similar comments from Deutsche Bank which on Tuesday said tough market conditions could lead to more job cuts.

Boys should get HPV vaccine too, panel says

ATLANTA (AP) ? A government panel is recommending that young boys also get the controversial HPV shot. That's the vaccine now given to girls to prevent cervical cancer.

Doctors argue that it could protect boys against genital warts and some kinds of cancers. But they also say vaccinating 11- and 12-year old boys could also help prevent the spread of the sexually transmitted virus to girls.

The HPV vaccine has been controversial since it was recommended for girls five years ago. And only about a third of adolescent girls have been fully vaccinated against the virus.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices made the recommendation Tuesday. Federal health officials usually adopt what the panel says and asks doctors and patients to follow the recommendations.

(AP) ? Plaxico Burress had the big breakout game the New York Jets have been waiting for.

The veteran wide receiver caught three touchdown passes, including the go-ahead score that was set up by another interception by Darrelle Revis, and the Jets stormed back in the second half to defeat the San Diego Chargers 27-21 on Sunday.

Leading 21-17, the Chargers appeared to be driving for a possible game-sealing score when Philip Rivers threw to Vincent Jackson and the ball tipped off the receiver's hands and right to Revis, who returned the interception 64 yards to the Chargers 19.

Revis had two interceptions on Monday night, including a 100-yard touchdown return, in the Jets' 24-6 win against the Miami Dolphins.

After a few runs by Shonn Greene and a defensive holding penalty ? the Chargers' 11th penalty in the game ? Mark Sanchez found Burress on a slant for a 3-yard touchdown to give the Jets (4-3) the lead for the first time with 8:41 remaining. It was Burress' second three-TD catch game of his career, and first since 2007 while with the Giants.

San Diego turned it over again on its next possession when the Chargers (4-2) faced a third-and-6 from their 41 and Kyle Wilson picked off Rivers for the first interception of his career.

Nick Folk's 30-yard field goal with 1:36 left made it 27-21. San Diego had one last shot for a winning drive, but couldn't really threaten against New York's defense.

With the victory, the Jets headed into their bye-week break with two straight wins ? both at home ? after a three-game road losing streak. They also are off to their first 4-0 start at home since 2004.

Sanchez finished 18 of 33 for 173 yards and three touchdowns, all to Burress, and an interception. Burress had just four catches for 25 yards, but he provided the red-zone presence the Jets hoped he'd be when they signed him as a free agent after he served 20 months in prison on a gun charge.

Greene had a season-high 112 yards on 20 carries. LaDainian Tomlinson, facing his former team for the first time since signing with the Jets last offseason, became the fourth running back in NFL history with 600 catches before leaving in the fourth quarter with what the team called an illness.

The game had some added spice when Jets coach Rex Ryan created a coast-to-coast stir when he said he would've won a few Super Bowl rings if he had been hired as the Chargers' coach in 2007. That job went to Norv Turner, who shot back at Ryan asking if Ryan had those rings stored with the ones he has guaranteed with the Jets.

But it was the Chargers who jumped out to an early lead and would have been up by a bunch if not for their mistakes. San Diego, coming off its bye, was sloppy as it was called for a whopping 13 penalties that kept the Jets in it early.

Mike Tolbert gave San Diego a 21-10 lead with 1:16 remaining in the first half on a 1-yard touchdown run.

The drive went 87 yards on 11 plays, helped by a 29-yard run by Tolbert that drew an angry first pump on the sideline from Ryan. Three plays later, Malcom Floyd made an acrobatic one-handed catch on which many of the fans at MetLife Stadium wanted Ryan to challenge, thinking the ball might have hit the ground on Floyd's way down.

On second-and-goal from the 8, Jim Leonhard was called for pass interference while defending Antonio Gates. After two runs for no gain, Tolbert bulldozed his way into the end zone from a yard out.

New York had an impressive drive on its second possession of the second half, capping a 10-play drive on Burress' 4-yard touchdown catch that made it 21-17 with 2:57 left in the third quarter.

The Chargers took a 7-0 lead just 1:49 into the game when they took advantage of a turnover by the Jets.

After three straight runs ? and a rare first-quarter first down by the Jets ? Sanchez was hit and threw a wobbly pass to Dustin Keller, who caught the ball but had it ripped out of his hands by Donald Butler. The Chargers' linebacker ran down the sideline and clear into the end zone, and capped his touchdown with a mock tribute to Tomlinson by sticking out his arm and flipping the ball off his fingertips as the Jets running back does when he scores.

Tomlinson, sixth on the NFL's career rushing list, reached his milestone midway through the first quarter when he joined Larry Centers (827), Marshall Faulk (767) and Keith Byars (610) as running backs with 600 or more receptions. He got No. 600 on a 6-yard shovel pass from Sanchez on third-and-7 from the Chargers 22. The Jets kicked a field goal on the next play to cut the deficit to 7-3.

New York appeared to take a 10-7 lead on its next possession on a 23-yard touchdown catch by Santonio Holmes, but the score was negated by a holding penalty on center Nick Mangold. Two plays later, Sanchez went for the end zone again, tossing a pass to Burress that was easily picked off by Eric Weddle and returned 25 yards to the Chargers 24.

San Diego took advantage of the turnover, going on a 14-play scoring drive that was capped by Gates' 2-yard touchdown catch with 12:11 left in the first half, putting the Chargers up 14-3.

Gates had missed three straight games with a flare-up of plantar fasciitis in his right foot after tearing scar tissue near the injury Sept. 18 against New England. He finished with five catches for 54 yards.

The Jets came right back as Burress caught a 3-yard touchdown pass with 7:18 left in the opening half to make it 14-10. The Jets were helped by four Chargers penalties ? two pass interference calls and two offsides ? on the drive.

Rivers was 16 of 32 for 179 yards and a touchdown, but also had the two costly interceptions.

New Study Finds No Mobile Phone, Brain Cancer Link (LiveScience.com)

Although the health effects of radiation from mobile phones has long been up for debate, a new study from Denmark found that cellphones do not increase the risk of cancerous brain tumors.

Following a 17-year study, a group of researchers from the Institute of Cancer Epidemiology in Copenhagen concluded that mobile phones do not raise the risk of brain cancer.

The study, which was published this week in the British Medical Journal, involved 358,403 Danish cellphone plan subscribers over a 17-year period and concluded that those with 13 years or more of mobile phone exposure faced the same cancer risk as non-subscribers. The study is the largest of its kind to date.

?There was no indication of dose-response relation either by years since first subscription for a mobile phone or by anatomical location of the tumor ? that is, in regions of the brain closest to where the handset is usually held to the head,? the study stated.

However, the study comes on the heels of a report released by World Health Organization, which ?found that mobile devices may increase chances of developing glioma, a type of brain cancer. [Read: Cellphones May Increase Risk of Brain Cancer]

In June, a group of 31 scientists from 14 countries attended the WHO/International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in Lyon, France, and reviewed hundreds of scientific articles to discuss the possibility that these exposures might induce long-term health effects, in particular an increased risk of cancer.

Although the report did not claim cell phones cause cancer, the scientists called for more research to be done to draw further conclusions about the health effects.

Working Group Chairman Dr. Jonathan Samet, of the University of Southern California, previously said in a press release that "the evidence, while still accumulating, is strong enough to support a conclusion, which means that there could be some risk, and therefore we need to keep a close watch for a link between cellphones and cancer risk.?

The latest study stressed that the results are not conclusive and called for more research to be done on the topic:

?As a small to moderate increase in risk for subgroups of heavy users or after even longer induction periods than 10-15 years cannot be ruled out, however, further studies with large study populations, where the potential for misclassification of exposure and selection bias is minimized, are warranted,? the study in the British Medical Journal said.

Eagles' Samuel knocks the ball away from Redskins' Moss in the end zone during their NFL football game in LandoverReuters

The 2011 Philadelphia Eagles seem to make news every week, so why not make some news on their bye week, too?

Cornerback Asante Samuel joined Tim McManus and Pat Callahan of 97.5 The Fanatic in Philly earlier today.? And Samuel made it clear that he?s not happy with the team?s reported willingness to trade him.

?Definitely, it doesn?t sit well with me,? Samuel said.? ?Definitely, I?ve been nothing but what they expected me to be when they brought me there. . . .? Definitely, it doesn?t sit well with me.? And obviously they don?t want me there, so life goes on.? So we?ll see where I?ll be at.?

Samuel says that knowing the team doesn?t want him won?t affect his play.

?Well, as long as I?m getting paid I?m gonna do my job,? Samuel said.? ?So whoever [is] cutting the check, I do my job. . . . So I?m not worried about that.? I just know in the back of my head they don?t want me there.? So, you know, that?s not gonna leave.? They put it out there so everybody could know that, so I know that and everybody knows that.? So it?s in the back of my head.? And Asante Samuel is a business entity first, so I?m going to make sure I handle my business accordingly.?

Samuel was the subject of trade rumors after the Eagles acquired Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Nnadmi Asomugha in the days after the lockout ended.? Last week, those rumors resurfaced before the annual trading deadline.

Samuel joined the Eagles on the first day of free agency in 2008, only weeks after dropping what would have been a perfect-season-clinching interception for the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.? Signed through 2013, Samuel?s salary spikes from $5.9 million this year to $8.4 million next season.? He?s due to earn $10.4 million in base salary in the final year of the deal.

How the major stock indexes fared Thursday (AP)

Stocks swung between losses and slight gains Thursday on reports that European leaders remain divided over efforts to fend off a larger financial crisis. The news out of Europe overshadowed an unexpected recovery in manufacturing in the Northeastern U.S.

Officials from the 17 countries that share the euro were scheduled to meet at a summit this Sunday to discuss ways to contain the damage. On Thursday, Germany and France called for a second emergency summit next week after it became clear that they would not be able to bridge their difference before the weekend meeting.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 37.16 points, or 0.3 percent, to close at 11,541.78.

    The S&P 500 index rose 5.51 points, or 0.5 percent, to 1,215.39.

The Nasdaq fell 5.42, or 0.2 percent, to 2,598.62.

    For the week:

The Dow is down 102.71 points, or 0.9 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 9.19 points, or 0.8 percent

The Nasdaq is down 69.23, or 2.6 percent

    For the year to date:

The Dow is down 35.73, or 0.3 percent.

    The S&P 500 is down 42.25, or 3.4 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 54.25, or 2 percent.

    92% Senna

    All Critics (110) | Top Critics (31) | Fresh (101) | Rotten (9)

"Senna" makes a fascinating subject in a pretty entertaining film about a sport that isn't followed that closely by most Americans. But our very ignorance of that subject helps the film and adds to its impact. We don't know this story by heart.

A psychologically intriguing if at times too hagiographic portrait of a man who often held pole position in his profession and felt nearer to God because of it.

There's not an ounce of fat or a wasted shot throughout.

You don't have to know anything about car racing at all. Instead, you simply have to like a great story, one that has all the elements: drama, inspiration, competition, victory, defeat, betrayal and, looming above it all, tragedy.

It's stripped of narration, talking heads, and anything else that might threaten to slow it down.

Even if you can't tell Formula One from Grecian Formula, Senna is pretty exciting stuff.

Though the film seemingly had a good ambassador for the sport, astounding racing footage and was well-presented, the subject matter never fully engaged me.

You don't have to be a Formula 1 nut to enjoy this enthralling documentary ... Asif Kapadia's film Senna is so skillfully put together that its portrayal of a complex, charismatic and fascinating figure will grip even those with no interest in the sport.

"Senna" is a streamlined piece of filmmaking, completely immersing the viewer in Senna's world and never losing momentum as it moves from one breakneck race to another.

It's impossible not to be impressed by how director Asif Kapadia and writer Manish Pandey have managed to craft a biographical film completely out of archive footage.

Uses an astonishing wealth of racing and interview footage - including film shot by in-car cameras during races - to chart in a compelling way the dramatic rise and heart-rending end of the Brazilian legend.

The film is a snapshot in time of an imperfect, interrupted life more than a gateway drug to racing enthusiasm.

There's no doubt Senna was a great driver, but this competently executed highlights reel doesn't tell us much beyond that.

...an entertaining, absorbing and inspiring documentary celebrating a champion's talent.

Ayrton Senna was a phenomenon, and as such, he was filmed, interviewed, and photographed repeatedly throughout his career, images now assembled as the documentary Senna.

Even those with no interest in Formula One - and I count myself amongst such people - will be captivated by this phenomenal motion picture.

"Senna" is simply the greatest sports film I have ever seen.

Kapadia fosters a distinct 'you are there' feeling for the races by composing his visual storytelling entirely of vintage footage, mostly derived from the Formula One archives.

    Exhilarating in the extreme.

    Undeniably gripping stuff.

I simply didn't care about it, and unless you already know who Senna is and are curious to know more, I doubt if you will, either.

It's hard to see how anyone wouldn't be absorbed by this fascinating film about a formidable driver and man.

"Senna" is carefully edited and makes sometimes spectacular use of extensive home movies and videos.

Occupy Wall Street shows muscle, raises $300K (AP)

NEW YORK ? The Occupy Wall Street movement has close to $300,000, as well as storage space loaded with donated supplies in lower Manhattan. It stared down city officials to hang on to its makeshift headquarters, showed its muscle Saturday with a big Times Square demonstration and found legions of activists demonstrating in solidarity across the country and around the world.

Could this be the peak for loosely organized protesters, united less by a common cause than by revulsion to what they consider unbridled corporate greed? Or are they just getting started?

There are signs of confidence, but also signs of tension among the demonstrators at Zuccotti Park, the epicenter of the movement that began a month ago Monday. They have trouble agreeing on things like whether someone can bring in a sleeping bag, and show little sign of uniting on any policy issues. Some protesters eventually want the movement to rally around a goal, while others insist that isn't the point.

"We're moving fast, without a hierarchical structure and lots of gears turning," said Justin Strekal, a college student and political organizer who traveled from Cleveland to New York to help. "... Egos are clashing, but this is participatory democracy in a little park."

Even if the protesters were barred from camping in Zuccotti Park, as the property owner and the city briefly threatened to do last week, the movement would continue, Strekal said. He said activists were working with legal experts to identify alternate sites where the risk of getting kicked out would be relatively low.

Wall Street protesters are intent on hanging on to the momentum they gained from Saturday's worldwide demonstrations, which drew hundreds of thousands of people, mostly in the U.S. and Europe. They're filling a cavernous space on Broadway a block from Wall Street with donated goods to help sustain their nearly month-long occupation of the private park nearby.

They've amassed mounds of blankets, pillows, sleeping bags, cans of food, medical and hygienic supplies ? even oddities like a box of knitting wool and 20 pairs of swimming goggles (to shield protesters from pepper-spray attacks). Supporters are shipping about 300 boxes a day, Strekal said.

The space was donated by the United Federation of Teachers, which has offices in the building.

Close to $300,000 in cash also has been donated, through the movement's website and by people who give money in person at the park, said Bill Dobbs, a press liaison for Occupy Wall Street. The movement has an account at Amalgamated Bank, which bills itself as "the only 100 percent union-owned bank in the United States."

Strekal said the donated goods are being stored "for a long-term occupation."

"We are unstoppable! Another world is possible!" Kara Segal and other volunteers chanted in the building lobby as they arrived to help unpack and sort items, preparing them to be rolled out to the park.

While on the streets, moments of madness occasionally erupt in the protest crowd ? accompanied by whiffs of marijuana, grungy clothing and disarray ? order prevails at the storage site.

It doubles as a sort of Occupy Wall Street central command post, with strategic meetings that are separate from the "general assembly" free-for-alls in the park. One subject Sunday was data entry: protesters are working to get the names and addresses of donors into a databank, to thank them for their gifts.

The movement has become an issue in the Republican presidential primary race and beyond, with politicians from both parties under pressure to weigh in.

President Barack Obama referred to the protests at Sunday's dedication of a monument for Martin Luther King Jr., saying the civil rights leader "would want us to challenge the excesses of Wall Street without demonizing those who work there."

Many of the largest of Saturday's protests were in Europe, where those involved in long-running demonstrations against austerity measures declared common cause with the Occupy Wall Street movement. In Rome, hundreds of rioters infiltrated a march by tens of thousands of demonstrators, causing what the mayor estimated was at least euro1 million ($1.4 million) in damage to city property.

U.S. cities large and small were "occupied" over the weekend: Washington, D.C., Fairbanks, Alaska, Burlington, Vt., Rapid City, S.D., and Cheyenne, Wyo. were just a few. In Cincinnati, protesters were invited to take pictures with a couple getting married; the bride and groom are Occupied Cincinnati supporters.

More than 70 New York protesters were arrested Saturday, more than 40 of them in Times Square. About 175 people were arrested in Chicago after they refused to leave a park where they were camped late Saturday, and there were about 100 arrests in Arizona ? 53 in Tucson and 46 in Phoenix ? after protesters refused police orders to disperse. About two dozen people were arrested in Denver, and in Sacramento, Calif., anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan was among about 20 people arrested after failing to follow police orders to disperse.

Activists around the country said they felt that Saturday's protests energized their movement.

"It's an upward trajectory," said John St. Lawrence, a Florida real estate lawyer who took part in Saturday's Occupy Orlando protest, which drew more than 1,500 people. "It's catching people's imagination and also, knock on wood, nothing sort of negative or discrediting has happened."

St. Lawrence is among those unconcerned that the movement has not rallied around any particular proposal, saying "policy is for leaders to come up with."

"I don't think the underlying theme is a mystery," he said. "We saw what the banks and financial institutions did to the economy. We bailed them out. And then they went about evicting people from their homes," he said. He added that although he is not in debt and owns his own home, other people in his neighborhood are suffering and "everyone's interests are interconnected."

In Richmond, Va., about 75 people gathered Sunday for one of the "general assembly" meetings that are a key part of the movement's consensus-building process. Protester Whitney Whiting, a video editor, said the process has helped "gather voices" about Americans discontent, and that she expects it will eventually take the movement a step further.

"In regards to a singular issue or a singular focus, I think that will come eventually. But right now we have to set up a space for that to happen," Whiting said.

Some U.S. protesters, like those in Europe, have their own causes. Unions that have joined forces with the movement have demands of their own, and on Sunday members of the newly formed Occupy Pittsburgh group demanded that Bank of New York Mellon Corp. pay back money they allege it overcharged public pension funds around the country.

New York's attorney general and New York City sued BNY Mellon this month, accusing it of defrauding clients in foreign currency exchange transactions that generated nearly $2 billion over 10 years. The company has vowed to fight the lawsuit and had no comment about the protesters' allegation about pensions.

Lisa Deaton, a tea party leader from southern Indiana, said she sees some similarities between how the tea party movement and the Wall Street protests began: "We got up and we wanted to vent."

But the critical step, she said, was taking that emotion and focusing it toward changing government.

The first rally she organized drew more than 2,500 people, but afterward, "it was like, `What do we do?'" she said. "You can't have a concert every weekend."

The Wall Street protesters' lack of leadership and focus on consensus-building has help bring together people with different perspectives, but it's also created some tension.

"Issues are arising ? like who is bringing in sleeping bags without permission," said Laurie Dobson, who's been helping a self-governed "working group" called "SIS" ? for Shipping, Inventory and Supplies.

Sleeping bags were among items cited by Zuccotti Park's owner, Brookfield Properties, as not allowed on the premises ? along with tents, tarps and other essentials for the encampment. By Sunday, all those items were back.

Strekal didn't see that as a problem. Protesters could do it, he said, "because we're winning the PR war."

Around his neck hangs a tiny silver Liberty Bell ? a symbol of American independence given to him by a fellow activist.
