The official word isn't expected to come until Sunday, but by many accounts Penn State and Central Florida have come to an agreement to play a game in Ireland during the 2014 season.
The Orlando Sentinel reported Tuesday morning that organizers will make an official announcement on Sunday and at that time travel packages for the event will be unveiled. The Sentinel also reported that the game is slated to be played in Croke Park, which is located in north Dublin.
Penn State officials reiterated for the past several months that the two programs were coming close to reaching an agreement on the game and that it would only be a matter of time until the details were ironed out. By scheduling the game as the season opener, which is what it is expected to be, both teams would be able to travel over earlier in the week and get acclimated with their surroundings before playing in the 82,300-seat stadium.
Nearly one year ago the NCAA handed down unprecedented sanctions against Penn State that took the Lions out of postseason eligibility. The Ireland game is a way for the program and the fans to still participate in a bowl-like atmosphere while also helping to sell recruits on a unique opportunity.
PennLive will have more details about the game as more information becomes available.
