TORRINGTON >> The Torrington Historical Society announced Monday that they will make a $6,000 donation to the Torrington Historic Preservation Trust to assist in the restoration of Skee?s Diner.
This donation will provide the Trust with much of the funding required to move the diner from its current location at the corner of Main and East Elm streets to a safe location.
Ed Cook, Trust president, told the Register Citizen in the beginning of March that relocating the structure is the first step in the restoration process.
The Trust must have the diner moved by April 24. At the time, Cook expressed his doubt that they would be able to meet that deadline.
?We realized that a substantive contribution could save Skee?s diner by providing the Historic Preservation Trust with some financial resources to help move the diner,? said Historical Society President, David R. Bennett. ?We hope that others will be inspired to follow our lead and help with the restoration of the diner.?
The Trust took over ownership of the diner from Northwest Connecticut's Chamber of Commerce on March 7.
The Trust?s ultimate goal is to turn Skee?s back into a functioning diner, a plan that many Torrington residents are already excited about.
?Our intent is to preserve the diner,? Cook has stated, ?To renovate it back to its original state. Whether or not we can get there from here, we?ll have to see.?
?The Historical Society is proud to support the preservation of Skee?s Diner,? said Mark McEachern, executive director of the Historical Society. ?This contribution to the Preservation Trust is evidence of the Historical Society?s ongoing commitment to preserve Torrington?s history.?
Cook was not immediately available for further comment on the diner or the donation. Continued...
