One More Time: Is This The Samsung Galaxy S III?

s3-e1334773042379-600x400The amount of leaks, rumors and hype around the Samsung Galaxy S III are reaching iPhone-ish proportions. Consumers obviously want this phone. The latest set of alleged pics show a phone clearly born of Galaxy S pedigree but there's no way of knowing if they're the real thing. The picture quality is of course a bit bad. It looks like it was taken with an iPad 2 or Galaxy Tab. Either way, the phone in question arguably matches up with the design cues of current Samsung devices albeit one a bit farther down the evolutionary trail.

Uptick in colorectal cancer among under-50 crowd poses questions for researchers

?....Whatever the cause, the rate of colorectal cancer in young adults has increased to the point where nearly 10 percent of new diagnoses are in patients younger than 50. Most of these patients were diagnosed in their forties, but the disease has been found in patients in their twenties and thirties.......Another troubling recent finding is that when colorectal cancers are diagnosed in younger patients, they are more likely to be at an advanced stage of the disease. A study published Feb. 13 online in Archives of Internal Medicine found 63 percent of colon cancers and 57 percent of rectal cancers are stage III or IV at diagnosis......?The important thing for radiologists would be the notion that certain individuals, because of their age, may be denied radiology procedures by insurance companies,? she said.......

Soldier to receive posthumous Medal of Honor

By Jeff Black, msnbc.com

A soldier who repeatedly charged at?North Vietnamese?forces during an ambush in Cambodia, forcing a retreat,?will be posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the White House announced on Monday.

It was May 10, Mothers Day in 1970, when Army Spc. Leslie Sabo Jr. was in a platoon pursuing North Vietnamese forces in the Se San River valley in Cambodia. When a larger force ambushed the platoon, Sabo immediately launched an attack at the enemy and killed several soldiers.

Then, according to the White House, Sabo rushed at an oncoming enemy force and drew fire away from American troops. The?North Vietnamese had to retreat.

As he was re-supplying ammunition, a grenade landed nearby. Sabo picked it up, threw it and shielded a fellow soldier with his own body. Wounded from the blast and enemy fire, he continued to fight, storming an enemy emplacement and throwing another grenade. The grenade explosion silenced the enemy, but also ended Sabo?s life, the White House said.

?His indomitable courage and complete disregard for his own safety saved the lives of many of his platoon members,? a news release from the White House said.

According to his hometown newspaper, the Ellwood City Ledger in Pennsylvania, Sabo?s body was shipped home in a body bag marked ?Remains Unfit for Viewing.? His father and namesake died seven years later without knowing the precise circumstances of his son?s death.

President Obama will present the?Medal of Honor, the military's highest?award for?combat valor, to?Sabo's family on May 16 at the White House. Sabo?s widow, Rose Sabo-Brown, and his brother, George Sabo, will attend the ceremony.

"It's a tremendous legacy to leave to our grandkids and let them know that sacrifices all these guys made,"?George Sabo told the Ledger.

Dick Clark Mourned By Ryan Seacrest, Snoop Dogg, More

Tributes from Carson Daly, Russell Simmons, Big Boi and New Kids on the Block flood in after pop-culture icon's death.
By Jocelyn Vena

The death of pop-culture icon Dick Clark has hit the entertainment world especially hard. Moments after news broke that the producer, radio personality and "American Bandstand" and "New Year's Rockin' Eve" host had died of a heart attack at age 82, some of showbiz's biggest names expressed their sadness over the loss.

Photos: The life and career of Dick Clark

Ryan Seacrest, who has long been Clark's heir apparent, having taken over the hosting duties on his "New Year's Rockin' Eve," said in a statement, "I am deeply saddened by the loss of my dear friend Dick Clark. He has truly been one of the greatest influences in my life. I idolized him from the start, and I was graced early on in my career with his generous advice and counsel. When I joined his show in 2006, it was a dream come true to work with him every New Year's Eve for the last 6 years. He was smart, charming, funny and always a true gentleman. I learned a great deal from him, and I'll always be indebted to him for his faith and support of me. He was a remarkable host and businessman and left a rich legacy to television audiences around the world. We will all miss him."

Carson Daly, who has also taken career cues from Clark, said in a statement: "We lost an icon today. I will always cherish the personal time we had together. I am forever indebted to Dick Clark and his legacy. My heart goes out to his family."

The love for Clark seems to defy genre, as his work on TV helped very diverse artists break into the mainstream. Russell Simmons tweeted, "Dick Clark was eternally young. No matter what culturally phenomenon was happening, he always embraced it. RIP..."

An MTV VP recalls his first job in television, working for the late Dick Clark.

Snoop Dogg added, "REST IN PEACE to the DICK CLARK!! U were pioneer n a good man!! Thank u sir."

Big Boi simply tweeted a photo of him and Outkast partner Andre 3000 standing alongside Clark, with the message "R.I.P Dick Clark."

Like Big Boi, "Weird Al" Yankovic also posted a photo of himself with the TV host, writing, "Such sad news. RIP Dick Clark."

Certainly his influence on merging music and television can be seen on TV today, especially on shows like "Glee." "A sad day as we have lost Dick Clark, an American Icon. You will be missed," one of the show's stars, Matthew Morrison, tweeted.

His loss is also felt by the pop world, with '80s boy banders New Kids on the Block tweeting, "#RIPDickClark. A true music maverick. You will be missed."

Their tourmates, the Backstreet Boys, added, ‏"Our hearts go out 2 Dick Clark's family. The memories u've created will live forever & r experiences w/ u is something we will cherish 4 all r lives."

Kings of Leon's Jared Followill seemed surprised by the news, writing, "R.I.P. Dick Clark? Say it ain't so..."

Madonna's manager Guy Oseary also tweeted about Clark's death. Back in the early '80s, just as Madge was taking her career to the next level, she famously declared on "Bandstand" that her ultimate goal was "to rule the world." Linking to a clip of that 1984 appearance, Oseary wrote, "Rest in Peace DIck Clark ..."

Share your condolences for Clark's family, friends and fans on our Facebook page.

10 Ways to Get Affordable Health Insurance

Recently, the health insurance industry stated that it plans to stop charging people with a history of medical problems a higher rate. This is good news, but the question remains if there are any catches or when health insurers will put this into effect. In the meantime, here are 10 ways to help you find affordable health insurance.

1) Check with your employer ? You may be able to get on a group plan at your job. This can be one of the most affordable ways to get health insurance.

2) Comparison shop ? Health insurance plans can differ from one another by the type of coverages offered, deductibles and co-payments required and health care providers available. You need to take a look at a few plans to make sure your needs are covered and you can afford the premiums and other out-of-pocket expenses.

3) Contact local agents and brokers ? Pick up the phone book and contact agents and brokers in your area and request quotes and plan information.

4) Use a comparison Web site ? By going online and using an insurance comparison Web site, you can get several quotes from different companies or agents just by completing one quote request form. This is a convenient way to get started.

5) Contact companies directly ? You may see television commercials or receive direct mail solicitations with toll-free numbers that allow you to call a health insurance company directly to request a quote. What?s more, you can usually look up these companies online and request a quote through their Web site.

6) If you?re a student, check with your school ? Many colleges and universities offer some sort of group student health insurance, which can be a good value while you?re between your parent?s coverage and your future employer?s plan.

7) Check with your association ? If you?re a member of an association, or credit union, see if they offer a health plan. Many times, associations will have some sort of group plan that they use as a benefit of membership.
icon cool 10 Ways to Get Affordable Health Insurance Check with your state?s insurance department ? You state?s insurance department may list health insurers who are licensed to do business in your state. This can be a good source of companies to call for comparison quotes.

9) Talk to friends and family ? People you know may be able to recommend a health insurance company. However, you want to still get comparisons and make sure that your needs are met.

10) Look into short-term health insurance ? Temporary or short-term health insurance can be an affordable way to get coverage if you recently lost your benefits, and are looking for another provider. There are limits to this type of coverage.

Shifty Shellshock In A Coma

Former 'Celebrity Rehab' star and Crazy Town singer in ICU.
By Gil Kaufman

VH1 "Celebrity Rehab" star and former Crazy Town singer Shifty Shellshock is reportedly in a coma in a Los Angeles hospital after his admission last week to the intensive care unit.

TMZ reported that Shellshock (born Seth Binzer), 37, entered the ICU last Thursday and is currently in an unresponsive state. At press time there was no information on what sent him to the hospital, but unnamed sources close to the singer speculated that it was drug-related.

The troubled singer was slated to appear in court his week for a pre-trial hearing stemming from a cocaine-related arrest in February. Last March he was arrested after police responded to a domestic violence call and officers realized he had outstanding warrants for an unrelated case.

Shellshock co-founded the rap-pop group Crazy Town in 1999 with pal Bret Mazur. They hit it big with their bubbly hit "Butterfly"
in 2001 from their debut album, The Gift of Game. It would prove to be the peak of their career, as their follow-up, 2002's more rock-oriented Darkhorse failed to connect with fans.

While his guest vocals on superstar DJ Paul Oakenfold's 2002 hit "Starry Eyes Surprise" helped turn that song into a global hit, Shifty released a solo album in 2004 called Happy Love Sick that flopped. Crazy Town briefly reunited in 2007, but never finished a promised third album.

In the interim, Shifty made more headlines for his chaotic personal life, which included police calls for domestic disturbances, multiple trips to rehab for his ongoing drug addiction and a number of drug-related heath scares. He checked into the first season of VH1's "Celebrity Rehab" show, then returned near the end of season 2 after his addictions got the best of him again. He also appeared in the first two seasons of the spin-off show "Sober House," during which viewers saw him continue to battle his drug demons over the course of multiple relapses. A spokesperson for VH1 told MTV News, "Our thoughts and prayers are with Shifty and his family at this difficult time."

Vitals - Size matters for obese cancer patients' drug dose, doctors say

By Rita Rubin

It doesn?t happen often, but sometimes Dr. Jennifer Griggs? hand trembles a bit when she prescribes ?enormous? doses of chemotherapy drugs for obese breast cancer patients.

Those powerful drugs kill not only cancer cells but healthy cells as well. And that makes some doctors nervous, so they order chemotherapy doses based on patients? ideal weight, not their actual weight.

But Griggs knows that such hesitation carries a high price: Up to 40 percent of obese cancer patients don?t get large enough chemotherapy doses, jeopardizing treatment of individual patients?-- and the overall public health.

Now, Griggs and her co-authors, writing in the latest issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology, have published new guidelines aimed at making sure even the heaviest cancer patients get the full treatment they need.

?It looks like we could save up to 6,000 lives in breast cancer a year,? Griggs says, by giving obese patients the right-sized dose.

The guidelines should help resolve confusion among cancer doctors over the correct doses for patients who weigh in at 250, 300, even 400 pounds.

?I get a lot of emails from people who ? want to fully dose, and their colleagues are telling them they can?t,? says Griggs, a University of Michigan breast cancer specialist.

The confusion over how much chemo to give obese patients stems in part from the caps research trials used to put on doses, Griggs and her coauthors write.

Take the drug docetaxel, or Taxotere, used to treat breast and lung cancers. The traditional capped dose is 150 milligrams. But for a 400-pound patient, the size-based dose would be 212 milligrams, a significant difference, says Judith Smith, director of pharmacology research at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Even at that world-renowned institution, some doctors insist on using outdated caps, says?Smith, of the department of gynecologic oncology and reproductive medicine.

?The physicians fight me on it,? says Smith, who was not involved in writing the new guidelines. Still, she says, ?I don?t fight that battle on a daily basis anymore.?

The authors of the new guidelines acknowledge a scarcity of studies that randomly assigned obese patients to capped doses or size-based doses of chemotherapy drugs.

But, they write, research suggests that obese cancer patients actually do better, not worse, when treated with doses commensurate with their size. They don?t experience any more toxicity with weight-appropriate doses than do lean patients, and they are more likely to be cured than those who are under-dosed.

?You?re not going to harm your patient if you give them the full dose,? Griggs? co-chair Dr. Gary Lyman, a professor of medicine at the Duke Cancer Institute, tells msnbc.com. ?In fact, just the opposite.?

Under-dosing is probably a ?significant? contributor to the higher cancer death rates among overweight and obese patients, Lyman says.

Size-based dosing might most benefit breast cancer patients who are black and/or poor, the authors write. No matter what they weigh, breast cancer patients in those groups are more likely to receive reduced doses of chemotherapy, and their higher rates of obesity only compound the problem.

Correct dosing would be a boon even amid an ongoing shortage of cancer drugs, says Lyman, who calls the situation "a travesty." Appropriate dosing of obese patients should have little or not impact on the shortage situation. In most cases, Lyman says, fully dosing obese patients simply means using all of the vial of a drug instead of throwing away part of it.

There are exceptions to the recommendation of full dosing of chemotherapy drugs for obese patients, according to the guidelines. Fixed doses, prescribed independent of a patient?s weight, are justified for a few, such as carboplatin and bleomycin, because of concerns about nerve tissue damage.

The guidelines note that costs, even insurance co-pays, could be higher with larger doses, although, Griggs says, many chemotherapy drugs are off-patent and relatively inexpensive.

And, Lyman says, the cost of treating recurrent cancer or providing palliative care after the disease has spread ?probably far outweighs giving the full dose of chemotherapy.?

Ashton Kutcher To Play Steve Jobs In 'Jobs'

Indie film about Apple co-founder will shoot during 'Two and a Half Men' hiatus.
By Gil Kaufman

Ashton Kutcher
Photo: Yasuyoshi Chiba/ AFP/ Getty Images

Floppy hair? Check. Internet savvy? Check. Less than a year after his death, the life of technology guru and Apple Inc. co-founder Steve Jobs will be honored in an upcoming independent biopic entitled "Jobs" starring Ashton Kutcher.

The TV and movie actor, who bears a striking resemblance to a young Jobs, is slated to begin filming the movie in May during his hiatus from "Two and a Half Men." The plan is to begin production before a rival film, based on writer Walter Isaacson's lauded Jobs biography, gets off the ground. Jobs died on October 5, 2011.

"Jobs" will be directed by Joshua Michael Stern ("Swing Vote") and will chronicle Jobs' rise from a Northern California hippie upbringing to the co-founding of Apple, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Kutcher has a well-established reputation as a romantic comedy actor in films such as "Valentine's Day," "New Year's Eve" and "What Happens in Vegas," but his experience in more dramatic roles is thinner. He's tried his hand a few times, in flicks such as 2004's "Butterfly Effect" and 2006's "Bobby," but has yet to prove that he can carry a lead dramatic role on his own. The filming schedule shouldn't interfere with another technological leap Kutcher has signed up for: a trip to near outer space aboard British billionaire Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic Airlines. Ashton recently plunked down $200,000 to become one of the first 500 passengers to blast off into weightlessness aboard one of the company's space planes, which are expected to begin launching in 2013 or 2014.

Do you think Ashton Kutcher is the right pick for the role of Steve Jobs? Leave your comment below!

The surveyed women spend an average of 81 minutes per day on Facebook, whereas men spend 64 minutes. Low educated groups and low income groups who spend more time on Facebook also report feeling less happy and less content with their lives. This relationship between time spent on Facebook and well-being is also salient for women, but not for men. These are some of the results of Sweden's largest Facebook study ever, a project led by Leif Denti, doctoral student of psychology at the University of Gothenburg.

Facebook is a habit-forming activity 85 percent of the respondents use Facebook as part of their daily routine. Almost half of the respondents indicated that it is difficult to stay updated and on top of things without Facebook, and one quarter responded that they would feel ill at ease if they didn't get to log in on a regular basis.

'Facebooking may become an unconscious habit. A majority of the respondents log in every time they start their web browser. This may even develop into an addiction,' says Leif Denti, doctoral student of Psychology at the University of Gothenburg.

People with low income and low-educated individuals spend more time on Facebook

Women are generally more active than men on Facebook. On average, women spend 81 minutes per day Facebooking, whereas men spend 64 minutes. Users with low income and low education use Facebook more than other groups. Within these groups, users who spend more time on Facebook also report feeling less happy and less content with their lives. This relationship is also present for women, but not for men.

We brag, provoke, and mainly write about positive events

One third of the male respondents stated that they provoke others on Facebook. That is about twice the figure for women (one fifth). One quarter of the respondents use Facebook to brag.

'Facebook is a social tool that is clearly used to manage relationships with friends and family. But users won't write just anything most of the content they share has something to do with major events, positive events and when feeling good. Only 38 percent write about negative emotions and events,' says Leif Denti.

Facebook statistics from the study:

  • The average user spends 75 minutes per day on Facebook
  • The average user logs on to Facebook 6.1 times per day
  • 70 percent log in every time they start their computer or web reader
  • 26 percent feel ill at ease if they do not get to log in regularly
  • Women spend on average 81 minutes per day on Facebook
  • Men spend on average 64 minutes per day on Facebook
  • Facebooking is primarily a habit among young users
  • Older Facebook users use Facebook to get to know more people
  • 67 percent of young users use Facebook to kill time
  • 38 percent share negative information in their status updates
  • Women write more about emotions and relationships
  • One third of the men try to provoke others on Facebook, which is twice the figure for women
  • More than 50 percent of the users broadcast information and knowledge via Facebook
  • Women who use Facebook more are also report feeling less happy and less content with their lives
  • One quarter of the respondents brag on Facebook

APPROACH

The study was based on data collected from more than 1000 Swedish 18-73 year olds from June to September 2011 via a web-based questionnaire.

The faith factor: Religious liberty is GOP mom's big issue

Faith and religious liberty is a big factor in GOP mom Rosemary McDonough's politics, even if she's not in lock step with all church teaching.

Rosemary McDonough is as cheerful of disposition as they come, but sometimes she feels a little under siege. She's a mannerly Republican surrounded by often-opinionated liberals: She's a family-minded columnist in her left-leaning local paper. She's a conservative volunteer amid many with a social justice bent.

Married for 32 years and the mother of two nearly grown children, Ms. McDonough has had a long career as an academic fundraiser. She graduated from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa., and got her master's degree at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. She's a lifelong Roman Catholic who goes to mass and attends a weekly Bible study. From time to time, she takes an online theology course from Boston College. And even when her faith has seemed to fail her, she's dealt with it by ducking into church, empty at midweek, to clear the way in life's static for God.

Early in her marriage, as she and her husband got on their feet financially, she used birth control, knowingly breaking with church teaching. But that has no bearing on her opinion of the Obama administration's birth control insurance mandate ? she vehemently opposes it.

"It's the difference between a private decision and public policy," she says, adding that she is "absolutely in sync" with the teachings of her church, including the belief that Catholic marriage should be open to the possibility of children. "There could be an issue with the Jewish faith or the Muslim faith or any of the Protestant denominations and I'd support them, too, if that's what their faith believes." She calls the one-year extension for implementing the policy "an insult," as if ? given a year ? Catholics would turn away from their beliefs. She calls the payment compromise "window dressing."

McDonough also disagrees with the administration on care of the poor. "Government breeds a lot of dependency," she says, adding that certain social programs will always be needed. But she prefers private charity as smaller, more local, and better equipped to identify and address need. "The more you take in taxes, the less is available for philanthropy."

As for herself, she says, "When you see poverty, you roll up your sleeves and you drive to North Philadelphia and you help them." At the inner-city school where she volunteers, she takes every opportunity to model family life for students who've never experienced it ? not smugly, but to illustrate the social and economic unit that has historically helped lift the poor. She presses her own family to go together to school concerts, for instance, and modeling family life has also been central to their longtime mentoring of a young man from the school. "I call him my third child," she says, and as a result of his frequent presence at their dinner table and family activities over the years, she hopes he sees the possibilities inherent in a well-functioning family.

Mitt Romney is McDonough's candidate. She likes his generosity, as well as the respect for religious liberties he evidenced as governor of Massachusetts when he struggled, albeit unsuccessfully, to work out a conscience exemption to gay rights legislation. The legislation barred Catholic Charities in the state from following the belief that adoptive parents be male-female married couples. As a result, the church, which had handled half the adoptions in the state, stopped sponsoring them altogether, keeping children in foster care longer and harming their chances for adoption, says McDonough, a past board member of the National Council for Adoption.

McDonough's own two children were adopted after she and her husband learned they were infertile, an irony not lost on the former birth control user. "I didn't think God was punishing me," she reflects. "I realized God was leading me on another path."

McDonough embraces life in all forms and objects to social/health policy that would edit out the messy. Look at all the 10-and-11-year-olds running around the neighborhood who were "oops" babies, she says, prime abortion candidates whose parents were "done" when they accidentally conceived. "On any given day I could strangle any one of them," she jokes. But live without them? No. "Think of how the neighborhood would be diminished."

The first atlas of the surface of the human brain based upon genetic information has been produced by a national team of scientists, led by researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and the VA San Diego Healthcare System. The work is published in the journal Science. The atlas reveals that the cerebral cortex - the sheet of neural tissue enveloping the brain - is roughly divided into genetic divisions that differ from other brain maps based on physiology or function...

Italy's Monti Seeks Chinese Investment, Says Reforms Working

Italy's PM?Mario Monti urged China to step up investment in Italy and tried to reassure Beijing that the euro zone debt crisis was close to resolution and tough economic reforms passed by his government were working.

Prime Minister Mario Monti urged China on Saturday to step up investment in Italy and tried to reassure Beijing that the euro zone debt crisis was close to resolution and tough economic reforms passed by his government were working.

Speaking after meetings with officials including Premier Wen Jiabao and the head of the China Investment Corporation (CIC), Lou Jiwei, Monti said there had been clear interest in greater cooperation but he had no concrete measures to announce.

"I don't want to be too ambitious but my hope is to generate some new enthusiam on Italy," he told reporters.

"We underlined one of the aspects which in our judgment should be reinforced, the aspect of investment," he said.

On the last leg of a tour that included Kazakhstan, South Korea and Japan, Monti reiterated remarks he had made in Tokyo - that the worst of the euro zone debt crisis appeared to have been resolved.

"No one can say the euro zone crisis is totally over, and I think it would also be a dangerous attitude for Italian policy if we were to come into a state of complacency," he told reporters.

But he said the crisis was "virtually over" and fears that Italy could become a new flashpoint had eased since the turmoil last year which swept away Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and brought Monti's technocrat government to power.

"This so far has not happened, and I believe it will not happen. So allow me no complacency at all, but some relief on this point," he said.

He said his government was aware of the sacrifices being demanded of Italians through spending cuts and tax rises and admitted that some of the measures, in the middle of a recession expected to last all year at least, were "rough".

"I always have to make clear to the Italian people that, although it's less obvious, it would be much worse for their families to end up like Greece," he said.

DEMONSTRATION

Monti's unelected government has passed a series of painful spending cuts, tax rises and pension reforms to help cut Italy's huge public debt but has run into difficulties after an initial honeymoon period in which market confidence improved sharply.

He faces a delicate balancing act as he tries to persuade international investors that his drive to repair public finances is on track while calming mounting discontent at austerity measures which have started to hit ordinary Italians hard.

On Saturday, several thousand people took part in a protest march in Italy's financial capital Milan, where an office of Unicredit, one of the country's biggest banks, was damaged by flares thrown by demonstrators.

Monti faces particular pressure over labour reforms that are strongly resisted by unions and by the centre-left Democratic Party, which backs his government in parliament in a coalition with the centre right.

The standoff has sharply increased political tensions ahead of local elections on May 6-7, with the centre-right PDL party insisting that the reform propsals must pass as they stand.

Monti says the measures, which would weaken the strong employment protection enjoyed by some Italian workers, are needed to attract badly needed foreign investment and help make the job market fairer for younger workers.

He said the CIC's Lou Jiwei had told him the CIC had considered investing in Italy last year but had decided against it, partly over concerns about the rigidity of labour market regulations.

"They hesitated to go further because they saw some problems in the Italian economy. One of the problems that was specifically mentioned was an insufficiently flexible labour market," Monti said.

Monti says rules which make it hard for companies to fire employees with permanent contracts discourage them from hiring full-time staff and condemn growing numbers of mainly younger workers to a series of insecure, temporary jobs.

In a mark of the opposition he faces at home on the issue, Susanna Camusso, head of the CGIL, Italy's biggest trade union federation, repeated demands that the government drop one of the key elements of the planned reform.

She said Article 18 of the Italian labour code, which ensures that workers deemed to have been wrongfully dismissed by their employers have the automatic right to reinstatement was a fundamental "measure of the freedom and dignity of workers".

The CGIL will join the other main union federations in a demonstration on April 13 against the government's reforms and plans a day-long general strike to demand that the Article 18 protections are preserved.
