Great Design Plant: California Fuchsia Brings Color and Hummingbirds (3 photos)

Distinguishing traits. Tubular flowers come in bright orange or red. Leaves are small and grayish. Choose from a number of varieties of California fuchsia. Newer varieties, in particular, are long blooming. 'Bert's Bluff' is orange red. 'Ghostly Red' has the purest red flowers and fuzzy gray-green leaves. Others include 'UC Hybrid' (developed at UC Davis) and 'Calistoga' (orange-red).

How to grow it. Plant it in fall or early spring, so the roots can establish before hot weather. Make sure drainage is quick. Water it regularly (every week or two) during the first growing season. After the plants are established, cut back to watering only as needed. Prune back established plants almost to the ground in fall after the bloom season. Lightly prune the branch tips in spring to encourage bushy growth.

Swatch CEO hopes for 9 billion Sfr sales in 2013: paper

ZURICH (Reuters) - Swatch Group might be able to achieve sales of 9 billion Swiss francs ($9.36 billion) this year, Chief Executive Nick Hayek was quoted as saying on Sunday, adding the important Chinese market recovered in June.

"The first half of the year was certainly much more difficult than last year. But I see very good growth opportunities for the Swiss watch industry for the second half of the year," he told the NZZ am Sonntag newspaper.

Hayek said sales of the priciest products had suffered most in China in the first five months of the year, but Swatch had still seen double-digit growth for its brands in the high, medium and lowest price categories.

"The situation in the luxury market in China improved in June," he added.

Switzerland's watch industry has been grappling with weak demand in China, where a slowing economy and a crackdown on lavish gifts weigh on sales, and Europe, where austerity programs hit consumer spending.

With its entry-price Swatch brand and mid-price Tissot and Longines, Swatch Group, which also owns high-end Omega, is less exposed than peer Richemont to very expensive watches targeted by a Chinese government anti-corruption campaign.

Hayek said Swatch's purchase this year of the high-end jewelry arm of Harry Winston might allow the firm to reach gross sales of 9 billion francs this year, assuming significant improvements in currency effects.

Swatch saw gross sales rise 14 percent to 8.143 billion francs in 2012.

Analysts predict Swatch will report 2013 sales of 8.8 billion francs on average, Reuters data shows.

Hayek said he hoped the Harry Winston business would "soon" be able to achieve sales of 1 billion francs under Swatch leadership, compared to the $430 million it turned over in 2012.

Arkansas had been in the lead for 2015 prospect Zach Rogers (Lewisville, Texas/Hebron) for quite some time. On Saturday, the stud offensive lineman made it official by committing to the Razorbacks, becoming the second 2015 player to give Arkansas his pledge.

Rogers made the commitment during a quick weekend trip to Fayetteville, Ark. He chose Arkansas over offers from Texas, Oklahoma, Baylor, Texas Tech and UCLA. While he was grateful for those offers, no school compared to his love for Arkansas.

Rakon sells 80% of Chinese plant to trim debt

Rakon, the second-worst performing stock on the New Zealand sharemarket in the past year, will sell 80% of its Chinese joint venture factory to a Chinese electronics manufacturer for $US18.8 million ($24 million) to reduce debt.

Rakon, which will retain a 5% holding in the venture, is selling the stake to Shenzhen Stock Exchange listed ZheJiang East Crystal Electronic Co, a specialised electronic components manufacturer, the Auckland-based company said in a statement. It expects to take a $32 million impairment on the investment.

In May, Rakon said it planned to cut debt to $13.5 million in the current financial year ending March 31, from the $36.1 million outstanding when it made the announcement in May. The sale means debt can be reduced both earlier and below its target, the company said today.

Rakon and ZheJiang will share resources and capabilities, with ZheJiang funding expansion of the factory to enable the venture to achieve greater scale while Rakon provides research and development, technology and marketing to the partnership. Competition is strong and further consolidation in the industry is likely in the next three years, Rakon said.

Shares in the company, which makes crystal oscillators used in smart phones and navigation systems, had jumped today before the stock was halted for the announcement and edged up to 28 cents from 25 cents when they resumed trading, taking their gain so far today to 22%. The shares have tumbled 50% in the past 12 months.

The company posted a loss of $32.8 million last financial year as it cut up to 60 local jobs to shift manufacturing to China.

The sale is expected to settle on September 30, pending a final agreement and any required regulatory approvals. A further update will be given at the interim results in mid-November, the company said.

Samsung ships its 55- and 65-inch 4K TVs to Korea on July 6th

If you're one of the lucky 100-plus Koreans who pre-ordered one of Samsung's F9000-series 4K TVs this June, you'll be glad to know that you're getting your reward very soon. The company has just announced that both the 55- and 65-inch F9000 sets should ship to Korea on July 6th. As before, the series is a more affordable yet functionally similar alternative to Samsung's 85-inch behemoth -- customers get the Ultra HD screen resolution and Evolution Kit support at relatively modest prices of 6.4 million won ($5,670) for the 55-inch TV and 8.9 million won ($7,913) for its 65-inch cousin. We're still twiddling our thumbs waiting for a launch on this side of the Pacific, but those who need something to tide themselves over can read Samsung's translated press release after the break.
