Adolescents particularly susceptible to drinking habits of romantic partner's friends

ScienceDaily (Sep. 29, 2011) ? The drinking habits of a romantic partner's friends are more likely to impact an adolescent's future drinking than are the behaviors of an adolescent's own friends or significant other, according to a new study in the October issue of the American Sociological Review.

"Dating someone whose friends are big drinkers is more likely to cause an adolescent to engage in dangerous drinking behaviors than are the drinking habits of the adolescent's own friends or romantic partner," said Derek Kreager, lead author of the study and an associate professor of crime, law, and justice at Pennsylvania State University. "This applies to both binge drinking and drinking frequency."

For example, the study found that the odds of an adolescent binge drinking if his or her partner's friends engage in heavy drinking is more than twice as high as the likelihood of an adolescent binge drinking if his or her friends or significant other drink heavily.

"The friends of a partner are likely to be very different from the adolescent and his or her friends and they might also be, at least a little, different from the partner," said Kreager, who coauthored the study with Dana A. Haynie, a sociology professor at Ohio State University. "Adolescents are motivated to be more like their partner's friends in an effort to strengthen their relationship with their partner."

Of course, the influence of a significant other's friends on an adolescent's drinking habits is not always negative. "If an adolescent is a drinker and he or she starts going out with someone whose friends predominately don't drink, you would find the same effect but in the opposite direction," Kreager said.

Relying on data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, a survey of U.S. adolescents enrolled in grades 7 through 12 in the 1994-1995 school year, the Kreager/Haynie study considers responses from 449 couples (898 students) in 1994, when they hadn't necessarily gotten together yet, and in 1996, after they had become a couple. Kreager and Haynie focus on heterosexual couples who were students during both waves of the survey.

In their study, the authors also found that before getting together, adolescent dating partners share few of the same friends and that an adolescent's friends are likely to be the same gender as he or she. "Couples often come from different friendship groups," said Kreager.

These results support the idea that the peer contexts of dating expose adolescents to new opportunities and norms that influence their own drinking behavior, while also increasing opposite-gender friendship ties and expanding early adolescent mixed-gender peer groups, according to the authors.

Still, Kreager said, it's important to note that although the drinking habits of a romantic partner's friends are more likely to impact an adolescent's future drinking than are the behaviors of an adolescent's own friends or significant other, the adolescent's friends and partner are likely to be influential nonetheless.

Interestingly, the research indicates limited gender differences in observed associations. "Consistent with prior literature, our findings indicate that girls are significantly less likely than their male partners to binge drink," Kreager said. "However, we find that connections with drinking friends, romantic partners, and friends-of partners have similar positive associations with the drinking habits of boys and girls. Moreover, our research suggests that, if anything, males are more susceptible to a significant other's influence than are girls."

In terms of policy implications, Kreager said, "The study demonstrates the need for educators and policymakers to more closely examine dating and the people dating puts adolescents in contact with when they consider interventions to address drinking behaviors, attitudes, and opportunities."

Colon Cancer Initial Screening For Men Should Be Earlier Than For ...

New research from Austria finds men have a higher rate of advanced colon cancer tumors than women of the same age and suggests male sex is a risk factor for the disease. The researchers propose this means men should be screened earlier than women, but do not say whether this ought to be by delaying the age when women are initially offered screening or bringing forward the age men are offered it.

You can read how Dr Monika Ferlitsch, of the Austrian Society for Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Vienna, and colleagues, analyzed the results of more than 40,000 screening colonoscopies to reach these conclusions in a paper published in the September 28 issue of JAMA.

Their results show that men have a higher rate of advanced tumors compared to women in all the age groups they examined.

Colorectal or bowel cancer is the fourth leading cancer killer worldwide and claims 610,000 lives a year.

Even though some studies show that men are at a greater risk for advanced tumors than women, current practice is that both men and women aged 50 and over are urged to have an initial screening colonoscopy. This looks for adenomas, which are polyps or benign tumors and also detects advanced adenomas and colorectal cancer.

Ferlitsch and colleagues investigated the most appropriate age for initial screening colonoscopy in groups of male and female patients to attain a higher detection rate of advanced tumors and cancer which could result in lower death rates.

For their study, they examined data from 44,350 participants (51% women) in Austria who took part in a national colonoscopy screening between 2007 and 2010. The median age of the females was 60.7 years and of the males was 60.6 years.

They found a significantly higher rate of colorectal cancer and advanced tumors among men compared with women in all age groups, suggesting that ?male sex constitutes an independent risk factor for colorectal carcinoma and indicating new sex-specific age recommendations for screening colonoscopy?.

For example, they found the prevalence of colorectal cancer overall among men was double that of women (1.5% compared to 0.7%).

And among 50- to 54-year-olds, 5% of men had advanced adenomas compared to only 2.9% of women.

And they also found that men in their mid-50s had a similar rate of colorectal cancer as women ten years older (CRC rate was 1.3% in men aged 55-59 and 1.2% in women aged 65-69).

Another measure they examined was the average number needed to screen (NNS) to detect adenomas. They found this to be 5.1 for all individuals, 4.0 for men, and 6.7 for women.

However, in 50- to 54-year-old women, NNS was nearly twice as high as in men at the same age (9.3 for men compared with 5.4 for women). And among 45- to 49-year-old men, NNS was 5.9, similar to the 6.0 found for women aged 60 to 64 years.

The authors recommend that:

?? deciding whether to adjust the age at which screening begins also requires considering whether the recommended age for women should be older or the recommended age for men younger.?

They also urge further prospective studies be done to establish the relative clinical effectiveness of colonoscopy screening at different ages.

The recession has caused a lot of companies to reassess their marketing strategies and budgets. Companies are also concerned about their overall strategic direction. Internet marketing is the answer to success in these tough economic times where customers are much more demanding and expecting real value for highly customized products and services. Moreover, internet marketing offers the lowest customer acquisition cost for the highest ROI and conversion of any advertising medium. It is the ?go to? solution for slumping sales in a recessionary market.

Unfortunately, for many companies, their internet strategies are costly, slow to evolve, and woefully underperforming. While internet marketing is the answer to exponentially improving sales and profits, if not done expertly from a planned, experienced and comprehensive approach, its chance of success is minimal at best. There is a great need in the marketplace for a highly experienced and skilled business consultant who can first assess the overall health and direction of a company, and subsequently help to make strategic change where necessary. Then the consultant takes that new strategic plan forward and applies it toward a company?s website design, web development, SEO and internet marketing in a measurable and results-based implementation strategy.

The competitive edge gained by working with ABC Business Consulting comes from its ability to provide and implement website design, search engine optimization and a marketing strategy that significantly improves not just the client?s bottom line but also the profitability of the business. This comprehensive strategic approach improves company operations while significantly reducing marketing costs and exponentially increasing sales in the identified key profit centers of the company.

As part of this new hybrid offering of internet success services ABC Business Consulting has just taken live a new website (BusinessConsultingABC.com) showcasing its website design, web development, SEO and internet marketing prowess. The website offers rich design; fast page load speed; an incredible user experience; several professionally produced videos; substantial resources on online marketing and SEO; and a highly customized WordPress Content Management System (CMS) that will be offered to all its website design and development clients. ABC Business Consulting understands how to customize the WordPress CMS platform so it performs at a top level and is extremely user friendly for the benefit of its clients. This also includes customizing the WordPress platform to the website project to provide the client best-in-class experience and utility.

But in the end all of this doesn?t matter if a website doesn?t get ranked, doesn?t obtain targeted traffic and doesn?t offer solid sales results. This is where ABC Business Consulting really excels and brings a lot of experience and expertise to the table. No keyword phrase is too competitive for ABC Business Consulting to take on and work toward top ranking. The internet success and business consulting solution is centered around great relevant content and a search engine optimization strategy that implements over a 6 month period yet yields results within 2-4 weeks. Moreover, the SEO strategy is tied into the client?s Pay Per Click (PPC) marketing strategy and campaigns that effectively reduce per customer PPC cost and remarkably increases PPC ROI and conversions.

Lowe pounded again, Braves routed by Phillies 7-1

(AP) ? Dan Uggla drop-kicked his bat after striking out on three pitches. Chipper Jones slammed his bat into the dirt after popping up. Derek Lowe just trudged off the mound to another round of boos from the home crowd, wondering how it all went wrong.

The Braves are mad and frustrated heading to the 162nd game.

Their season is on the brink after a potentially historic collapse.

"It's like living out a bad dream," Jones said.

Lowe had another miserable outing, surrendering five runs in four-plus innings, and the Braves took another step toward giving away a playoff berth that seemed certain just a few weeks ago with an ugly 7-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday night.

St. Louis pulled even with the Braves, rallying from an early 5-0 deficit to beat the Houston Astros 13-6. Atlanta took sole possession of the NL wild-card lead on June 20 and had held it until Tuesday, according to STATS LLC.

Chase Utley, Hunter Pence and Jimmy Rollins homered to back a three-hit outing by Roy Oswalt (9-10), who tuned up for the playoffs with a strong performance in a largely disappointing season.

Talk about disappointing. Look what's happened to the Braves.

They lost their fourth in a row and eighth in 11 games, sending them to the final day of the regular season tied with the Cardinals. Atlanta had an 8?-game lead just three weeks ago.

"We've got one game to play in the month of September, then October comes around and it's a new month," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "There's not a person in that locker room who I wouldn't want to be on my team to play that game."

"I would hope so," Jones said, trying to make light of the grim situation. "We're pretty much all he has anyway."

Sixteen-game winner Tim Hudson will try to wrap up the wild card or at least force a one-game playoff against Cardinals, which would be Thursday night in St. Louis.

"It is what it is," Gonzalez said. "We've played 161 games and it comes down to one. We've done it to ourselves. No excuses there. We've got to go get it tomorrow."

Lowe (9-17) has been a $15 million bust for the Braves, losing all five of his September starts and drawing the ire of Atlanta fans. They cheered lustily when Gonzalez popped out of the dugout to make a pitching change after Lowe gave up a leadoff single in the fifth, then heckled the high-priced right-hander as he trudged to the dugout ? and straight to the showers without so much as a pause.

"When you're 9-17 with a (5.05) ERA, come on, there's really nothing you can say to sugarcoat it," Lowe said. "I'm man enough to say I've had a terrible year. But we've still got a chance. Our best pitcher is going tomorrow. This isn't about me. This is about this organization and how much hard work these guys have put in this season."

The NL East champion Phillies, winning their 101st game of the season, jumped ahead on the eighth pitch of the game. Lowe served up one to Utley, who drove it into center-field seats for his 11th homer.

An uneasy feeling settled over Turner Field. It would only get worse.

The Phillies extended the lead to 3-0 in the third on Rollins' run-scoring and Pence's sacrifice fly, the inning helped along by Lowe's ill-advised decision to try to get the lead runner at third on Oswalt's sacrifice. Carlos Ruiz beat the throw and everyone was safe.

The advantage grew to 4-0 in the fourth when two singles set up another sacrifice fly, this one by Placido Polanco.

Philadelphia finished off Lowe in the fifth. When Rollins led off with a single, rookie Arodys Vizcaino was summoned from the bullpen. But the youngster gave up a towering two-run homer to Pence, his 22nd, that turned the game into a full-fledged rout.

Rollins added his 16th homer in the seventh off another Braves rookie, Julio Teheran.

The Braves fans stopped booing long enough to cheer on the last-place Astros from afar, breaking into periodic chants of "Let's Go Houston!"

"I heard it," said Braves center fielder Michael Bourn, who was acquired from the Astros at the trade deadline. "I was actually bobbing my head to it. I'm right there with 'em. Let's go Astros. You can't be against that."

The top three hitters in the Phillies' lineup ? Rollins, Utley and Pence ? combined to go 6 for 12 with three homers, five RBIs and four runs scored. Rollins had three hits and Pence drove in three runs.

Manager Charlie Manuel improved his record in Philadelphia to 645-488, tying Gene Mauch (645-684) for the most wins in franchise history.

"I'll get more out of it when I beat him," Manuel joked. "That's a good sign of the teams we've had."

No one in the Atlanta lineup did anything until Martin Prado hit a meaningless homer off Kyle Kendrick in the ninth to keep the Braves from their second shutout in four games. They've scored only four runs in that span.

Staked to a comfortable lead, Oswalt went on cruise control. The right-hander went six innings and allowed just two runners to get as far as second base. His only real trouble came in the third when Bourn singled, stole second and Prado reached as Rollins bobbled a grounder at shortstop for an error. But Jones, who had an MRI on his ailing right knee before the game, grounded into a double play.

"My arm's strength back," Oswalt said. "My breaking pitch was working pretty well. Hopefully, it'll carry into the playoffs."

Jones and the Braves just want to make it to the playoffs. "You never expect this to happen to you," he said.

NOTES: The Phillies won their third in a row and improved to 11-6 against the Braves in the season series. ... RHP Jair Jurrjens is scheduled to pitch Thursday in the Florida instructional league in what the Braves are hoping will be a tuneup for the playoffs. He's been out with a bone bruise in his right knee. ... The Braves had hoped to save Hudson (16-10) for the playoffs, but their No. 1 starter has to go Wednesday with the season on the line. Joe Blanton (1-2) gets the nod for the Phillies, who also plan to use starter Cole Hamels for a couple of innings in relief, as well as a series of relievers. ... Braves SS Alex Gonzalez left the game in the second inning after re-injuring his strained right calf. Fredi Gonzalez said the injury appears more serious than before and he doesn't expect his starter to play on Wednesday. Jack Wilson would fill in.

Survey: Health insurance costs surge in 2011 (AP)

INDIANAPOLIS ? The cost of employer-sponsored health insurance surged this year, snapping a trend toward moderate growth, but experts say these increases may slow again in 2012.

Annual premiums for family coverage climbed 9 percent and surpassed $15,000 for the first time, according to a report released Tuesday by the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Health Research and Educational Trust. Premiums for single coverage rose 8 percent compared to 2010.

That growth compares to increases last year of 3 and 5 percent for family and single coverage, respectively.

The study does not delve into why rates jumped in 2011, but foundation CEO Drew Altman said a number of factors may have played a role. He noted that health care costs continue to rise. Insurer profits and the health care overhaul also have some impact.

Companies and workers split premiums for employer-sponsored coverage, the most common form of health insurance in the United States.

Businesses likely reacted to these cost increases by freezing retirement account contributions or giving a flat wage or smaller increase to their workers, said Helen Darling, CEO of the National Business Group on Health, a nonprofit organization that represents large employers on health care issues.

"(Workers) basically are giving their pay raise to the health system," said Darling, who was not involved with the Kaiser study. "It's really bad news."

The annual study was conducted earlier this year and includes results from more than 2,000 companies across the country. It also indicates that many more families than previously believed have benefited from a popular provision in President Barack Obama's health care overhaul allowing young adults to stay on a parent's health plan until they turn 26.

Kaiser asked employers how many people were added to their insurance plans because of this provision and estimated that 2.3 million young adults enrolled. Last week the government had reported that the number of uninsured young adults had dropped by nearly 1 million since the law took effect, a finding independently corroborated by Gallup.

The difference isn't necessarily a contradiction.

The Kaiser survey may have counted young adults who were covered by a more expensive policy and switched to their parent's plan to save money.

The overhaul aims to eventually cover millions of uninsured people. Altman said initial provisions from the law, which was passed last year, added about 1.5 percent to this year's premiums, which is about what many insurance analysts and benefits experts expected.

Many workers are about to receive notices from their employers regarding health insurance coverage for next year. Altman said he cannot say whether this year's increase represents a bad omen for 2012 or if it is just a one-year blip.

Insurers have been saying for months that health care use has grown more slowly this year, something industry observers pin on the sluggish economy. Altman and other benefits experts say that could lead to lower premium increases next year, since insurers base their rates in part on how often people use care.

Benefits consultant Mercer said earlier this month an employer survey it did shows that 2012 health insurance costs will rise by the smallest amount since 1997.

Ecommerce Business Models ? 3 Money-making Models For ...

Ecommerce is a somewhat new innovation which is quickly expanding in our society, particularly in residence businesses. If you?re considering the chance of earning income with an Ecommerce business, then the following brief discussion of 3 possible Ecommerce business models is for you.

The first business model to think about will be the Retail Model wherein you sell/auction goods online either from your own on the net store or from an already established internet site like eBay. The challenge would be to discover the most effective products to promote and then make a decision no matter whether you?ll profit much more from establishing a store of your own or from working with an established site.

A second viable business model is to promote and sell other peoples? products as an associate. This is referred to as the affiliate model and is popular since you do not need to cope with prospects, orders, or inventory. You could opt for from the thousands of suppliers with whom you want to work and whose merchandise you?ll promote for a commission, which can differ from 5% to 75%.

A thirdmodel, and possibly probably the most difficult, would be to generate your personal products or services after which recruit other people to promote them for you. Informational goods including digital Ebooks, software program, courses, CDs or DVDs are popular objects and effortless to promote. This can be certainly one of essentially the most lucrative Ecommerce business models mainly because it encourages you to be an entrepreneur and broadens your horizons; then from there you are able to commence to recruit affiliates to sell your merchandise and services with and for you.

Starting an Ecommerce business, like starting any business, will call for a monetary investment from which you could reap wealthy rewards. It is going to also demand an investment of time, dedication, and hard work, resulting in wonderful private and expert growth for you.

Does your travel insurance offer trip cancellation insurance ...

Article by anubhav kapoor

A recent survey held in the aftermath of the large cancellations done due to the Iceland volcanic ash clouds has concluded that most of the people buying travel insurance are least bothered about travel cancellation insurance or trip interruption insurance. In fact, most people are prone to thinking that such forms of visitor?s insurance are simply unneeded. This fallacy stems from the fact that most travelers never accept the fact that their travel plans too can become victims of unforeseen natural disasters.

Further, many of the travelers are vulnerable to buying visitors insurance in an uninformed manner. A prime example of this is people who depend upon travel insurance provided by the credit card companies. As it turns out, this is perhaps the most ineffective form of Visitors Insurance. Most of these insurance plans are structured in a manner that ensures that the customer isn?t able to cash upon his insurance coverage.

If the example of trip cancellation insurance is continued, it has been established that the travel insurance provided by credit card companies has various, impractical clauses that renders the insurance coverage unproductive. While some of these insurance conditions might ask the traveler to report about the reason for the cancellation within 24 hours, some might demand that the reason for trip interruption should be backed-up by credible resources such as documentation from a local, weather-based authority.

The much wiser approach would be to purchase some form of trip cancellation insurance as a part of some comprehensive overseas travel health insurance plan. Such visitor?s insurance plans ensure that irrespective of the reason for the delay or cancellation of the scheduled travel, the insurance coverage is activated.

Many of the trip cancellation insurance features are retailed in the form of holiday-interruption plans or delayed-departure insurance plans. Some companies also retail them as holiday-abandonment insurance coverage. Essentially, all these are various types of insurance plans with a common objective, i.e. to provide insurance against the financial losses that are incurred due to delay, cancellation or change in the schedule of travel plans.

Reasonable cause for cancellation is criticalPlease understand that the reason that precipitates the need to cancel, delay or alter the travel plan should be one that is beyond the realm of doubt. This means that reasons such as terrorist linked activities, natural calamities or change of plan due to sudden news of death of someone in the family are considered as immediately-acceptable and reasonable causes since they are beyond the realm of control of the insured.

Some travel insurance providers provide a very comprehensive form of trip-interruption insurance coverage as a part of the more popular visitor travel insurance plans. Here, trip interruptions due to reason such as change of transit route by the airlines authority and excessive/unscheduled stoppages by the chosen mode of transport are also considered as viable reasons.

Buying Travel Insurance with CarePlease note that trip-cancellation or trip-interruption insurance may not always be included in your standard travel insurance plan. Further, not every insurance provider extends the comfort of including this form of insurance after purchasing a type of insurance plan. Thus, you are advised to check for trip cancellation coverage when you compare visitor medical insurance plans, i.e. before completing the purchase of your travel insurance.

Evaluate Medical Care provided in Travel Insurance ContractsMost people are beginning to understand the need to check the list of medical conditions listed as Pre-existing Conditions in the medical insurance contract. Many travel insurance providers are now ready to accommodate such cases wherein they provide insurance for a condition that may have been excluded as per the contract policies. This is done at slightly extra costs to ensure that a particular healthcare need of the insured is also covered. However, most people buying travel insurance don?t seem to question the kind of medical care they would be provided.

Nearly, every kind of visitor medical insurance policy document contains a list of the kind of medical facilities and names of the healthcare centers that can be accessed when medical care is needed. Many such insurance contracts clearly mark-out that their insurance coverage would be limited if a healthcare facility is sought outside the proposed list of medical facilities.

What will happen if you have a medical-care requirement that isn?t addressed by any such listed facility? For instance, if you are covered for a specific disease that can be resolved through a highly-complex medical procedure, how are you sure that every medical facility listed on the contract can provide such services? This is why it is recommended that such particular demands are discussed with your insurance provider before buying travel insurance.

PFT: Romo to play Monday?? |? 'Could barely breathe'

los-angeles-nfl-stadium-e1312984478397

As AEG?s proposed stadium, which would be built in downtown Los Angeles, continues to systematically clear a long string of hurdles, the folks behind the competing project in the City of Industry continue to push their proposal forward.

As recently reported by the Whittier Daily News, a group of former NFL players, state officials, and local officials recently spoke out in favor of the City of Industry venue, which would be built by Ed Roski.? They made their case at a meeting of the Four Corners Coalition, a nonprofit group that supports projects that benefit Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties in California.

?This is the perfect area and location for a stadium, because this is where the people live,? San Bernardino County Supervisor Gary Ovitt said.? ?If I had a choice between driving downtown on a Sunday and watching the game in my home, guess what?? I?m going to stay home; most people would.?

The former NFL players who appeared at the event included Marvin Smith, Reggie Berry, C.R. Roberts, Amon Arnold, Frank Rice, Ron Brown and Steve Wright.? Smith pointed to the fact that the City of Industry site permits traditional tailgating.

?I just think tailgating is a great experience, and I can?t wait to take my son to a tailgate party since I can?t play anymore,? Smith said.

Still, Roski?s proposal faces an uphill climb, even though it?s shovel-ready.? The NFL is believed to prefer the glitz of a downtown stadium.

Are speculators driving up oil prices?

It is often claimed that speculators are driving up oil prices artificially. That is a possible scenario, yet it wasn't applicable to for example the recent run-up in oil prices. For speculators to drive down oil prices paid by final users they must stock oil in physical inventories, something which they haven't done. Indeed, if you look at the numbers from the Energy Information Administration , it seems that speculation has been holding down prices. Crude oil and gasoline inventories are down by about 5.5% the latest year, while inventories of distillates (like diesel) and propane are down more than 10%.

Being unsure of the difference, they frequently purchase the completely wrong type of autoresponder, and find out too late that they have lost money on a program that is worthless to them.

A great autoresponder program is a system that is set up on your own web server. This is usually a free autoresponder that comes with your web web hosting account. Many individuals don?t like to make use of autoresponder services; so instead, they use a good autoresponder plan that they have more treatments for. Some of those people don?t like the auto responder programs that include their internet hosting accounts possibly and purchase autoresponder programs or scripts that should be installed on their web server. Dental marketing needs a particular program to better suit the brand newbusiness and also clients.

Other folks are quite happy with using an auto responder service. This can be a service that is normally paid for about a monthly or even yearly foundation. The fees are continuous, and things are browser dependent. "Rob has been kicking a few original songs around for a long time, but his schedule didn't allow it," a source told the magazine. Pattinson does have some credentials already: he's recorded two songs, "Never Think" (which he co-wrote with friend Sam Bradley) and "Let Me Sign" for the original "Twilight" soundtrack.

But unlike previous chart-toppers by actors ("She's Like the Wind," anyone?), Pattinson isn't planning to create something poppy that you can sing along to. "The album Rob will make will be guitar-based and drums, very organic-sounding, nothing pop," a second source told Us. "Like stripped-down Ray LaMontagne meets Van Morrison."

Outings With Babies and Toddlers ? Some Helpful and Proven ...

There was a time in every parent?s life when outings were fun ? a trip to the grocery store was leisurely, maybe even an enjoyable activity spent with a spouse. The movies, then a stop for a drink afterwards. Going out to dinner at any time, whether it?s 6:30 on a Friday night, or 10pm on a weeknight. There wasn?t really a care in the world back then, it seems.

And then came the kids.

Now an outing is a planned, fretted over, cumbersome task, sure to be filled with stress, mess, and the need for a change of clothes. Going to the grocery store? Might as well be packing up and heading off to war. The bookstore? A sedative could be in order. Any kind of social gathering? Better hope that grandma and grandpa will be there, too, or there is NO WAY you will be socializing at that gathering!

But when it comes down to it, parents have to get out of the house.

Outings with little ones are inevitable. So why not make them manageable? There are a slew of things to remember when planning and executing an outing with young children. Here are some of the things that I have found to get everyone home in one piece, and we stay just a little bit crazy, rather than completely insane, off the deep end, read about it in the newspaper the next day fanatical.

? Pack snacks and drinks. These should keep them occupied at least a few minutes, and maybe all that whining is because they are hungry!

? Don?t have high expectations. If it?s the grocery store, only get what you need if you are alone.

? Always have toys stashed ? in the car, your purse, the diaper bag, under your shirt. You never know when or where you will need them.

? If possible, tag team.

One adult for each kid. If possible?

? If it?s just one adult, have a double stroller ready. It might be huge and an ache to push, but you have kids! Who said this was going to be a walk in the park? Double strollers keep multiple kids in one spot -?a lot easier to manage.

? Get in and get out, especially if the kiddos seem a bit fussy. Sorry, the days of leisure shopping are over!

? Pay attention to nap-times, and plan accordingly. Kids are creatures of routine, no matter the age.

? BE FLEXIBLE! Enough said! If the outing doesn?t go as planned, just get over it, and don?t get worked up. Leave that to the little ones.

? Give them a reward when your kiddos are acting appropriately in public. It could be just a lollipop or sticker. They will feel important.

? If your little ones are upset, remember the obvious ?stressors? ? diapering, feeding, comfort. Are one of these things the problem? Those are all pretty easy to fix.

? Did I mention snacks?

? Strap them down somehow. A child running amok just asks for trouble. In a stroller, a cart, a front pouch, maybe even one of those kid leashes. And if you have two, more reason for containment. Don?t forget you were born with only two arms.

? Incentives to behave: ?After the grocery store, we can go to the park!?

? Craziness every now and then. If you act goofy, kids tend to giggle. Giggling is a lot better than screaming. People will look at you and smile, rather than look at you and shake their heads in disapproval.

? Stimulate them! It?s OK to walk by the toys, the ice cream, that dog in front of the store. Give the little ones something to look at and enjoy.

? Keep talking. Hang on to your little ones? attention.

? Use positive reinforcement. Rather than just yelling and saying ?no? when the little ones are acting up, why not praise them when they are well-behaved?

? Get a babysitter occasionally. Sometimes, you really do need to save some of the outings for adults only. This includes dates with your spouse, if you are married. So important!

To wrap things up, outings with little ones can be a chore, but you can make it less frantic, maybe even fun. You are a parent after all, so you must have some supernatural powers. Figure out something your child likes to do outside of your home, and work it into the outing. If you are grocery shopping, stop by the park. If it?s a stop at the shoe store, maybe go to the mall and stop at the pet store afterwards. Go into the children?s section of the bookstore. A doctor?s appointment can be followed by a stop at the ice cream shop. Why not reward your little ones when they exhibit appropriate outing behavior? And why not reward yourself as well ? who doesn?t like ice cream?

U.S. Bests Canada in Lowering Child Flu Rates

News | Health

A change in the U.S. flu shot policy for preschoolers has led to a 34 percent decline in flu cases for children ages two to four compared with their Canadian counterparts

Image:

Pity our neighbors to the north. A change in the U.S. flu shot policy for preschoolers has led to a 34 percent decline in flu cases for children ages 2 to 4 compared with their Canadian counterparts, according to researchers at Children's Hospital Boston and McGill University in Montreal.

The flu rates in the two countries had mirrored each other for years, the researchers found, but rates improved dramatically in the United States starting in 2006, the year that the U.S.-based Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended flu shots for tots.

The new U.S. flu policy had far-reaching effects in other age groups, too, likely because toddlers are germ mops, and keeping them flu-free spares the rest of the family from contracting influenza. The study was published today (Sept.19) in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.

Sharing the flu

The researchers limited their study to Boston and Montreal, two cities that share similar demographics and flu patterns during the unmercifully cold winter. They compared data from over 100,000 visits to Children's Hospital Boston and Montreal Children's Hospital from 2000 to 2009. This period included years when the U.S. and Canadian flu vaccination policies for 2- to 4-year-olds were aligned and the years when they differed.

The change in flu policy is the only logical explanation for the dramatic decline in U.S. flu cases compared with Canada, the researchers said. Everything else, including the viral strains, was essentially identical in the two cities.

The researchers had no data on vaccination rates in the older age groups, but they could determine that the U.S. flu rate dropped by 11 to 18 percent in other age groups, a result of "herd immunity."

Uncertain future

Aside from sparing kids and parents the misery of illness, flu prevention saves money. A study published in the journal Vaccine in July 2010, focusing just on flu rates among children under age 5, found that the economic burden in terms of hospitalization of kids and lost work among parents was more than $100 million a year. A study in June 2007, also published in Vaccine, estimated that a bad flu year costs the U.S. economy tens of billions of dollars in deaths, hospitalizations, lost wages and lower productivity.

Nevertheless, the 2006 U.S. policy change was controversial, given the skepticism some parents maintain about the number of vaccines children receive. Many still believe that the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is linked to autism, despite the fact that the only study making such a claim has since been retracted because its data were fudged. More recently, Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann linked the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine to mental retardation, despite no evidence of this. HPV is the primary cause of cervical cancer. [5 Dangerous Vaccination Myths]

The United States generally has better childhood immunization rates compared with Canada, according to data from the WHO and UNICEF. But that could change if the citizens and the leaders aren't behind the shots.

Sigh. With Canada doing better on most health factors ? fewer low-birth weight babies, lower infant mortality rate, fewer people living in poverty, higher life expectancy (by three years) ? it would be nice to keep at least some edge.

Technology funding makes climate protection cheaper

ScienceDaily (Sep. 19, 2011) ? To cost-effectively protect the climate, not only an emissions trading scheme but also financial support for new technologies is needed. Economising on targeted funding, for example for renewable energies, makes climate protection more expensive -- as scientists of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) now calculated for the first time, using a complex computer simulation that spans the entire 21st century. Without funding, energy technologies with high cost reduction potentials will hardly stand a chance, since they require a significant initial investment: a case of market failure.

"Companies in the global energy sector often rely on familiar technologies instead of striving for innovation -- they are more hesitant than companies in other industries, our analysis shows," says Matthias Kalkuhl, lead author of the study published in the scientific journal Resource and Energy Economics. Behind this behaviour stands not just inertia. Pioneers are paying the bill for the development and the risk of innovation, whose results are beneficial to everyone, and are then copied by competitors. Additionally, there is uncertainty for companies about the long term profitability of investments into new technologies, since the political framework -- for example future CO2 emission prices -- is unreliable: "The result is a self-reinforcing lock-in effect," explains Kalkuhl. "Inferior and therefore more expensive technologies dominate the market for decades. From a management point of view, it is rational. But economically it is fatal."

The reason for this particular restraint of the energy sector is this: the product -- electricity or heat -- is the same to the consumer, no matter which technology was used to produce it, according to Kalkuhl. As the product is homogenous, consumers have a low incentive to pay a significantly higher price for an innovative technology. This is in stark contrast to the case of smart phones or e-book readers. These can successfully capture new markets with clever product differentiation.

Effective political actions to promote new technologies, the computer simulation shows, are a feed-in tariff or quotas for energy produced by particular technologies. According to the scientists, only funding targeted at emerging technologies is effective: offshore wind power, usage of biomass, solar energy. The cost-benefit ratio is especially positive, if the financial support is limited to a period of, for example, 30 years. However, it is not economically beneficial to support already well-developed CO2-reducing technologies: nuclear reactors, water power, or highly efficient gas power plants.

For their analysis, the scientists have designed a new computer model which calculates the interplay of companies, households, and political actors as well as the resulting welfare effects. This so-called dynamic multi-agent model "shows robust results for a big range of scenarios, even though we had to include a few simplifications," says Kalkuhl. The model assumes a working emissions trading scheme with ambitious climate protection targets which promotes low carbon technologies.

The results are in contrast to conventional economic wisdom that emissions trading paired with technology funding is an inefficient duplication, and that innovation is sufficiently ensured by patent protection and general research funding. "We found that although it is possible to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions through emissions trading only, this is at a higher cost," says Ottmar Edenhofer, chief economist of PIK and co-author of the study. Only targeted funding "can introduce new technologies to the market which then show a steep learning curve -- in other words which improve and become cheaper quickly." Higher costs make political measures to protect the climate more difficult to achieve, thus making emissions trading and technology funding two sides of the same coin.

The effects only show up when the investment behaviour of many decades is taken into account. Previous studies were often only on the short term. "But climate policy is a long-term project," says Edenhofer. The government does not know any better than the companies which technologies are viable, but especially because of this uncertainty, it is the only player who can afford funding technology. However, without the introduction of a price on CO2 emissions paired with an emissions' cap, even the best technology funding is, says Edenhofer, rather useless. "Fighting climate change with subsidies only is simply not affordable."

Get Into an Enjoyable Hobby: The Restoration of Vintage Cars ...

Vintage car showsthat are found all across the country are great browsing places for people who love looking at classic cars that have been beautifully restored. The vehicles seem as if they have been restored to life, and any owners who did such marvelous restoration work themselves should really feel proud. Simply having a car rebuilt, on the one hand, and restoring it, on the other, are very different.

A car that is truly restored has the whole thing, including all of the parts, as authentic as possible, whereas a rebuilt car will use any parts that function. A classic automobile that?s been restored to the authentic original condition leaps a lot higher in value. This kind of restoration is a voyage in time, back to the time when the vehicle was still new. It can take a long time to restore a vintage car properly, and the completed work can be compared to a painting or a sculpture, such is the expertise involved. All of the components, even those hidden, need to be the original parts, so it can take a while acquiring all these parts.

The restoration process is lengthy and involves taking the car apart completely, followed by cleaning all of the original parts and finding a replacement or effecting a repair where it?s required, and then rebuilding it all. Usually the engine has to be rebuilt, but only if authentic parts are used will the vehicle retain its original value. Without an exhaustive knowledge of cars and their history, you won?t be prepared to restore a vintage automobile properly. Expertise of both mechanical and body work is necessary, without which you will not be able to restore a car to its original condition. Additionally, you will need to repair or restore the interior of the car, meaning upholstery work.

In case you are restoring a 1955 Chevy, you are not going to be able to get replacement seats, but you can recover the seats to match up with those used in a 1955 Chevy. You won?t get top dollar for a vintage car restored with look-alike parts because collectors demand the vehicle being restored to its original condition. For this to happen, there will be lots of searching for parts, particularly when searching for the original paint. To do all of this, you need to love cars, have enough money to buy the parts, space to do the work, and a lot of determination. You could give a car a new lease on life if you take it from the junkyard and repair it until it looks like new.

You will need a passion for restoring vintage cars, otherwise you will not cope well with the mandates on your time and patience. If you are good at restoring cars, they can be sold for quite a return?if you are willing to part with them. Sometimes it?s tough to say goodbye when you have poured a great deal of yourself into them. However, it can be a very gratifying, and even lucrative, hobby.
